Digital migration – what is at stake? • Digital migration will have an irreversible effect on the future of free-to-air television and e.tv • SA audiences are increasingly drifting away from free-to-air to pay TV platforms which offer multiple channels • e.tv needs DTT so that it can offer its audiences a multi-channel platform • Delays in launching DTT impact negatively on e.tv’s ability to compete effectively • e.tv therefore very keen that DTT be launched soon
e.tv role supporting DTT • Since 2006, e.tv has given extensive support to the DTT process: • Participated in all Ministerial and departmental processes • Participated in all regulatory processes • Served on all Digital Dzonga councils • Participated in DTT trials, including development of a channel exclusively for the trials • Assisted in formulation of public awareness campaigns • Participated in development of STB standard through SABS • Funded development of free-to-air User Interface and MHEG 5 SA profile • Participated in development of “Rules of Operation” • Served on ICASA’s Joint Spectrum Advisory Committee
To launch DTT, a number of internal and external processes must be completed
