The First Inhabitants of Colombia • The first inhabitants of Colombia were indigenous people, such as the Quimbaya and the Chibcha. • The Quimbaya came to Colombia during the 1st century B.C. They came from the eastern highlands of Colombia from about A.D. 1000-1538. • The Chibcha came to Colombia between 5500 B.C. and 1000 B.C. They were highly developed hunters and farmers from the Costa Rica-Panama border. Settlers • The first settlers were indigenous people such as the Quimbaya and the Chibcha. • Spanish explorers and conquers came and took Colombia for Spain in 1499, they came for the natural resources. • African slaves were forced to come to work in the early sixteenth century. • European immigrants came from countries such as Germany, Italy, Greece, and France during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and Polish and English immigrants came during World War II.

Historical Events • A constitution in 1858 created a confederation of all nine states called the Granada. • 1948 Jorge Eleicer Gaitan, a political leader, was assassinated. • 1999 a major earthquake strikes west Colombia leaving thousand dead. • In 2000-2001 there was a war for cocoa growing plantations in Colombia.
