Allegory • A story, poem, or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning, typically a moral or political one.
Allusion • An expression designed to call something to mind without mentioning it explicitly; an indirect or passing reference.
Connotation • An idea or feeling that a word invokes for a person in addition to its literal or primary meaning.
Idiom • Noun. A phrase or expression whose meaning is different from the literal meaning of its individual words.
Jargon • Noun. The specialized vocabulary used by those in a particular profession or way of life.
Metaphor • A figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable
Parody • An imitation of the style of a particular writer, artist, or genre with deliberate exaggeration for comic effect.
Patois 1. The dialect of the common people of a region, differing in various respects from the standard language of the rest of the country. 2. The jargon (terminology) or informal speech used by a particular social group SWAG!
Solecism • A grammatical mistake in speech or writing. • Breach in good manners
Soliloquy • An act of speaking one's thoughts aloud when by oneself or regardless of any hearers, esp. by a character in a play.
