Relocation Moving to new locations can be both enjoyable and stressful. • Country to country • State to state Relocation Research Project
Relocation Statistics During the last 12 months, Fermilab has: Been visited by: • More than 500 US citizens from other US Institutions (excluding those in the Chicago area), • More than 1,000 non-US citizens from institutions across the US or around the world, and Employed 302 non-US citizens. Relocation Research Project
What Relocation Might Mean…. Each year, more than 1,500 individuals are in various stages of the process of adapting to life in the United States, or to living and working at Fermilab. • Some are experienced with the US. • Some enjoy change and challenges. BUT • Not everyone likes change, and • Not everyone is familiar with the US, American culture, or the unique Fermilab environment. Relocation Research Project
Our Research • International Services is researching the process by which people transition to Fermilab: • Goal is to develop systems and resources to: • Emphasize enjoyable aspects • Minimize stressful aspects Relocation Research Project
“Culture Shock” • Individuals who are coming to Fermilab from different culture or a foreign country. • The change between what they are familiar with, and what is at Fermilab, is great for normal coping mechanisms. Relocation Research Project
“Transition Shock” • Relocating from other parts of the United States • The change these individuals experience can be equivalent to the change between countries/cultures in some aspects. Relocation Research Project
What we are Doing Our starting point: • Anecdotal information suggests that transitions to Fermilab are unnecessarily difficult • Need to verify, and clarify! Gain accurate information about actual experiences • Online Survey • Interviews • with recent arrivals to Fermilab • With anyone who has ideas, opinions or experiences to share Relocation Research Project
What we are Doing Verify understanding of issues • Confirm conclusions with Fermi organizations • GSA (Graduate Students’ Association) • WIST (Women in Science and Technology) • UEC (Users Executive Committee) • NALWO (National Accelerator Laboratory Women’s Organization) • DRISHTI (Mailing list and club for individuals of Indian heritage or interested in Indian culture) • More… Develop systems and resources to meet needs. Relocation Research Project
Goals • Optimize work performance, professional enjoyment and opportunities by: • Leveraging experience • Sharing successful coping strategies used by others • Ensuring that existing organizations and support systems are publicized and known by new arrivals • Implementing new, simple systems and resources • Buddy system? • Encouraging social support? • Online orientation presentations in multiple languages on basic life issues Relocation Research Project

Our Research Thus Far(What we have learned..) • Feelings of isolation: • Winter weather • Inability to meet and make new friends • Lack of transportation • Language barriers • Slang • “American accent” • American culture is much different: • Everything in excess • What are the “norms?” • Not always friendly • Unanswered questions • Taxes, banking, SSN, medical insurance, driving, and housing • Supervisors and directors do not always have the correct information Relocation Research Project
