How to Abstract Images • Ways to abstract: • Distort sizes • Vary colors • Simplify shapes • Vary perspectives • Focus on a particular area of an image • Flatten an image to look 2 dimensional • Alter the proportions
Your Assignment: Step 1 • Step 1: • Draw a contour image of your neighbor! • Divide a 9”x 24” sheet of paper into three segments of 8” x 9” each • Draw a contour form from a live reference (your neighbor) on the first segment. • Draw an abstraction of the first image onto the second segment. • Draw an abstraction of the second image onto the third segment then check with your instructor for more helpful advice.
Your Assignment: Step 2 • Step 2: • Divide a 9”x 24” sheet of paper into three segments of 8” x 9” each. • Transfer you final abstracted image onto each of the three segments. • Experiment with a different color scheme for each box using crayon in the first two segments and oil pastel in the third segment. http://colorschemedesigner.com

Your Assignment: Step 3 • Transfer your abstracted image onto a 12” x 18” sheet of paper. Note- due to the change in scale, Images do not have to be exact. They may be elongated and further distorted. • Choose the most successful color scheme to complete your image in oil pastel.
