IV.2.1Cognitive vision systems • Issue: vision systemsacquiring and using knowledge for decision making • Aim: to develop robust cognitive vision systems • Scope: adaptive systems, real-time platforms and vision architectures • permitting the development of novel computational frameworks • integrating multiple cues for scene modelling • capable of recognising large numbers of different objects temporal reasoning and incremental learning to achieve cognition
IV.2.2 Advanced control systems • Issue: high performance, distributed, composable, real-time control systems • Aim: novel scientific and technological concepts developed for and applied toreal-time controls for complex systems in uncertain environments • Scope : • algorithms, methods, architectures and tools • design, implementation, validation/verification, testing and integration • robust, fault tolerant
IV.2.3 Networks and technologies for distributed services and applications (i) • Issue: all-optical networks • Aim: to develop terabit capacity and WDM optical networks capable of supporting heterogeneous, multi-protocol services and applications • Scope: • technologies and architectures exploiting advances in optical transmission, switching and routing • interworking in the physical layer of optical core/metropolitan networks and heterogeneous WAN, LAN and access networks (mobile and fixed)
IV.2.3 Networks and technologies for distributed services and applications (ii) • Issue: communications networks • Aim: - to increasebandwidth capacity and QoS • network agility and functionality - to support seamless interoperability among heterogeneous networks (including access networks and LANs) • service interworking and management • Scope: network devices and protocols to support the full range of advanced (Internet, nomadic and interactive TV) services and applications active and dynamically reconfigurable network technologies, methods and tools
IV.2.3 Networks and technologies for distributed services and applications (iii) • Issue: application service provisioning, peer-to-peer computing, distributed applications • Aim: to develop and assess models, technologies and tools • Scope: shared and interactive use of applications and resources in geographically dispersed locations heterogeneous components and architectures Link to CPA9 GRID, focus on industrial applications
IV.2.4 Take-up measures (i) • Issue : optical networks • Aim : assess, compare and improve the performance, the systems applicability and the interoperability • Scope :optical networking equipment
IV.2.4 Take-up measures (ii) • Issue : mobile and intelligent agents, middleware • Aim : to conduct trial actions aiming at their adaptation and introduction in new services and/or industrial applications • Scope : distributed applications with shared resources
IV.2.4 Take-up measures (iii) • Issue : applications services provisioning • Aim : to conduct trial and best practice • Scope : • services over the network • making use of dispersed computing and storage resources
