A Sample Sensing Science Lesson • ACTIVITY • Water loss from plants • WS1: Measuring transpiration Using Humidity Sensors • Read: Transpiration is the loss of water by plants. Transpiration is the engine by which water is drawn through the plant and up into the leaves. The water is used by the plants for photosynthesis and structural support. Loss of too much water will lead to wilting of the plant. Some plants e.g Beet plants will wilt in the midday sun as a protection against water loss. In this practical you will be able to compare transpiration from leaves of different plants and see the effect of light on rate of transpiration.
Sample Lesson Continued Items you will need:
Sample Lesson Continued What to do: • You will need to cut a small hole in one of the cups to let the humidity probe be pushed into the beaker. It needs to be a tight fit but care should be taken not to damage the tip of the sensor as it is pushed through. • A hole will need to be made in the card. The plant stem will be pushed through the hole and into the water in the lower beaker • A second set can be assembled as a control. This second set will not have the leaf in the upper chamber. • Do not place the upper chamber over the leaf until you are ready to start recording. • Press the launch button to start graph • Place the upper chamber over the leaf. Press start to collect Data • At the end of the run remove the upper chamber and allow the humidity sensor to come back to normal room reading (approx 3-4 minutes). • Shine a light on the leaf and repeat the experiment (check overlay is on).
Leaf type Lowest humidity Highest humidity Time at lowest Time at highest Sample Lesson Continued Results: The results will be presented as a set of graphs. The information is in the difference between the shape of the graphs and the slope of the graphs. Fill the table below. Use the information to calculate the the time taken to reach highest humidity.
Sample Lesson Continued Questions: • Does the light change how quickly the humidity goes up inside the cup? • Compare the two graphs and describe the differences between them. • How does the size of leaf change how quickly the humidity goes up inside the cup? • Does the type of leaf have any effect on how quickly humidity rises inside the cup? • Was there any visible sign of water loss in the experiment? Describe what you have seen. • How could you make the experiments a fair test? Experiment Extensions • Try different leaves and see if the transpiration rate is different. E.g silver leaves, shiny leaves, long thin etc. • Does the color of the light have any effect, place a colored filter (gel) between the light source and the plant. • Which color has most effect?
