  2. Monday 8/29/11 Chemical Interactions Initial Kit Training

What we will do today… • Review the scope and sequence for 8th grade • Discuss expectations for the training • Learn how the binder is organized • Participate in the early lessons • Discuss implementation strategies for the classroom • Review expectations to see whether or not needs have been met

  4. Introductions Name School you will be at this year How many years have your been teaching? How many of those have been primarily science? One thing you did this summer

  5. Today’s Language Objectives We will read and follow instructions. We will write responses and answers to questions. We will write two definitions.

  10. Mystery Mixture

  11. Step One • Put on protective eyewear • Put one 5 mL spoon of the mystery mixture into a cup. • Observe the mixture. (Do not touch or taste the mixture.) • Record your observations in the Step One box.

  12. Step Two • Add one drop of water to the mystery mixture in the cup. • Take turns adding additional drops of water to the cups. Observe the mixture. • Record your observations in the Step Two box.

  13. Questions • What happened when you added one drop of water to the mixture? • What happened when you added a second drop? • Did it fizz and bubble every time you added a new drop of water? • What causes the bubbling and fizzing? • Why does the mixture stop fizzing after five pipettes of water have been added?

  15. White Substances A substance is a form of matter. There are millions of different substances on Earth. Each substance is different from every other substance.

  16. Vials 9 different vials containing white substances Each vial has a different substance…no mixtures. Two of these make up the Mystery Mixture. Your job is to determine which two.

  22. What we already know… A substance is a form of matter with unique composition and distinct properties. Substances can be represented with common names, chemical names, and chemical formulas.

  23. Reaction discussion When you added water to the mystery mixture, bubbles were produced. What are bubbles? Was the gas always there and just came out when water was added to the substances? Where did the gas come from?

  24. Chemical Reactions The gas formed as a result of a chemical reaction. During a reaction, starting substances change into new substances. Change is evidence of a reaction.

  25. Chemical Reaction Questions Do you think the two substances in the mystery mixture reacted when water was added? What is your evidence? Besides gases being created, what other changes might indicate a reaction has happened?

  26. Conclusion Is everyone 100% certain they know what the two substances are that make up the Mystery Mixture? Is there anything else we could do to get closer to being absolutely certain about which two mixtures make up the Mystery Mixture?
