Manual Transformation Transforms have preconditions and assertions. Preconditions are evaluated before transform applied. After substituting varible bindings, assertions are made.
Rules Rules superior to transformation since they can be used over and over again.
Reality Problem - Lack of Structure in databases Databases largely strings without fixed structure e.g. 4 in white and black widget w/ gold flanges Solution - growing support for XML Problem - Noise/Errors in database Incorrect spellings, missing information, inconsistencies Solution - growing support for “semantic” db systems
