  5. In 1993 the UKCC recommended a period of Preceptorship, of approximately 4 months for all newly qualified AND newly appointed nurses and midwives. Attention should focus on strengthening the practical clinical skills The purpose of support and guidance is to ensure that responsibilities are not placed too soon or inappropriately upon a newly registered or inexperienced practitioner

Selection and Preparation of the Preceptor Plays a vital role in the success and quality of Preceptorship “assist professional colleagues, in the context of your own knowledge, experience and sphere of responsibility to develop their professional competence, and assist others in the care team to contribute safely and to a degree appropriate to their roles” UKCC 1992
