Symptoms • Emotionally dependent • Needy • Passive • Clingy • Fear of separation • Difficulty making decisions • Places other’s needs above own • Overly sensitive • Avoids Conflicts • Tolerates abuse • Avoids responsibility • Easily hurt • Avoids being alone
Causes Cause unknown • involves biological & developmental factors • Possible Factors include: • Overprotective parents • Authoritarian parents
Diagnoses • Complete medical history is performed • Physical exam rules out other physical illnesses • Referred to psychiatrist or psychologist for evaluation
Treatment • Many never seek treatment • Often develop depression or anxiety • Symptoms might prompt seeking help. • Psychotherapy (main treatment method) • Medication • Focus on depression or anxiety.
