  1. Class Review Chapter 14

  2. Chapter 14 1. What is the difference between urban and rural land? • Urban land is land considered as having a population of over 2,500 people and is mostly big cities. Rural land is land considered to have under 2,500 people and is mostly rangelands or farmlands.

  3. Explain how and why land use changed after the industrial revolution. • During The Industrial Revolution land was used less from farming and rural areas and shifted towards Urban areas and factories, this was because more people moved to cities for work. Prior to the revolution more people lived in rural areas, after more live in urban.

  4. 3. Do more people worldwide live in urban or rural areas? urban

  5. What is an ecosystem service? Give at least 2 examples of ecosystem services. • Resources that are producd by natural and artificial ecosystems. • Purification of air and water • Preservation of soil and renewal of soil fertilizer.

  6. What is urbanization? • The movement of people from rural areas to cities

  7. 6. What does urban sprawl mean? • Rapid expansion of a city into the countryside around the city

  8. 7. What causes a heat island and what could be done in an area to eliminate this problem? • The increased temperature in a city, heat island can be moderated by planting trees for shade and by installing rooftops that reflect rather than retain heat.

  9. Why is urban planning and land use important? • To make sure public transportations are built to handle growth, to make sure traffic flows freely, making more green space, and to provide an easy access to public lands and buildings.

  10. 9. What alternate forms of transportation could be used to reduce CO2 emissions and congestion in a city? • Transit systems such as trains and public bus systems

  11. Identify a city that has a fairly successful city plan. What are the strengths of it’s infrastructure and design? Review sheet from land planning packet Chatanooga, TN, Davis, Ca, Finland ect.

  12. Provide a description for each of the following land types: Farmlands, Rangelands, Forestlands, Parks and Preserves. Include why each area is important and at least 1 thing that threatens each area. • Farmland threatland by overplanting and plowing, • Ranglands threatened by overgrazing • Forests threatened by deforestation • Parks and Preserves threatened by people, trash, roads, pollution • These places provide habitats, food, recreation, products (wood) ecosystem services ect.

  13. What are the 2 methods used to harvest trees? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each? • Clear cutting- removing all trees, quick and cheap but destroys habitats and causes soil erosion • Selective cutting- cutting only older trees and leaving others in place. More expensive and time consuming but leaves habitats mostly intact and soil erosion will be minimal

  14. What are some of the problems associated with deforestation? • Soil erosion, loss of habitat, loss of air purification (taking in CO2 producing O2)

  15. What does reforestation mean? • Replanting trees when they have been cut down. In some places this is mandatory but over 90% of deforestation is done in areas where reforestation is not required.

  16. What are the benefits of protected areas? Recreation, habitats for animals, never will be built on, creates appreciation for nature, research, provides ecosystem services
