  1. Math 120 Mathematics for General Education Satisfies General Education for:Grossmont College A3; CSU B4, IGETC 2A; Transfers to: CSU, UC.

  2. The Nature of MA120 • for non-science, non-engineering majors • a terminal course, i.e. not a pre-requisite for other math classes • focuses on problem solving and not algebra • strategy oriented but not formula oriented • all exercises are different and no pattern drills • covers many techniques that can be used outside mathematics as well • More Fun!

  3. What you will see in MA120? • Mathematics is more than just memorizing formulas and solving equations. • There are more than one way to solve a problem, and some methods can be better than the others. • The techniques we invented for mathematics can be applied to other disciplines as well.

  4. List of Topics Chapter 1 Draw a Diagram Chapter 2 Make a Systemic List Chapter 3 Eliminate Possibilities Chapter 4 Use Matrix Logic Chapter 5 Look for a Pattern Chapter 6 Guess and Check Chapter 7 Identify Subproblems Chapter 8 Analysis the Units Chapter 9 Solve an Easier Related Problem Chapter 10 Create a Physical Representation Chapter 11 Work Backwards Chapter 12 Draw Venn Diagrams

  5. Chapter 1 Diagrams are often the key to getting started on a problem. They can clarify relationships that appear complicated when written. In this chapter, you will see the value of using diagrams as problem-solving strategy. Draw a Diagram

  6. One picture is worth a thousand words

  7. A Spanish skyscraper reached 94 percent completion this week before anyone realized that the plans neglected to include a single elevator shaft. The building is 47 stories high.

  8. It took rescuers 17 days to locate the 34 Miners mainly because the diagrams for the tunnels were outdated, incomplete or inaccurate. The mine collapsed Thursday, 8/5/2010. (AP Photo/Luis Hidalgo)

  9. How to salvage the Costa Concordia ?

  10. Chapter 1 Draw a Diagram Example 1 Air Warbucks There is a rumor that Daddy Warbucks is planning to start a new airline. He plans to serve seven cities: San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, Dallas, Chicago, New York, and Miami. There will be nonstop flights between each pair of cities. How many different routes will this create?

  11. Chicago Seattle N.Y. S.F. Miami L.A. Dallas

  12. Chapter 1 Draw a Diagram Example 2Esther’s model train is set up on a circular track. Twelve telephone poles are spaced evenly around the track. The engine of Esther’s train takes 10 seconds to go from the first pole to the 4th pole. If the engine keeps running at this speed, how long would it take the engine to go all way around the track?

  13. Chapter 1 Draw a Diagram Example 3 The Pool Deck Curly wanted to dig his own swimming pool by hand with a shovel. He figured he needed a pool because digging it was hard work, and he could use it to cool off after working on it all day. He also planned a rectangular concrete deck around the pool that would be 6 feet wide at all points. The pool is rectangular and measures 14 feet by 40 feet. What is the area of the deck?

  14. Chapter 1 Draw a Diagram Example 4 The Life of a Musician John spent a quarter of his life as a boy growing up, one sixth of his life in college, and one-half of his life as a musician. He spent his last six years in retirement. How many years did he live?

  15. 1.WORM JOURNEY A worm is at the bottom of a 12-foot wall. Every day it crawls up 3 feet, but at night it slips down 2 feet. How many days does it take the worm to get to the top of the wall?

  16. 2. THE UPS AND DOWNS OF SHOPPING Roberto is shopping in a large department store with many floors. He enters the store on the middle floor from a skyway, and immediately goes to the credit department. After making sure his credit is good, he goes up three floors to the house ware department. Then he goes down five floors to the children's department. Then he goes up six floors to the TV department. Finally, he goes down ten floors to the main entrance of the store, which is on the first floor, and leaves to go to another store down the street. How many floors does the department store have? ___ Skyway___ ___ Street Level___

  17. 3. FOLLOW THE BOUNCING BALL A ball rebounds one-half the height from which it is dropped. The ball is dropped from a height of 160 feet and keeps on bouncing. What is the total vertical distance the ball will travel from the moment it is dropped to the moment it hits the floor for the fifth time?

  18. 4. FLOOR TILES How many 9-inch-square floor tiles are needed to cover a rectangular floor that measures 12 feet by 15 feet?

  19. 5. COUNTING ON NINJA TURTLES Joanne sets up her Ninja Turtles in a big circle with each turtle-spaced an equal distance from its neighbors. She then proceeds to count them in order around the circle. Unfortunately, she loses track of where she started before she finishes counting. But she realizes that she can still figure out how many turtles are in the circle by noticing that the sixth turtle is directly opposite the seventeenth turtle. How many Ninja Turtles are in the circle? 6th 17th

  20. 7. RACE Betty, Cathy, Isabel, Lani, Alma, and Ursula ran an 800-meter race. Alma beat Isabel by 7 meters. Betty finished 12 meters behind Ursula. Alma finished 5 meters ahead of Lani but 3 meters behind Ursula. Cathy finished halfway between the first and last person. In what order did they finish? Indicate the order and the distances between each girl. finish
