  2. What is the purpose of shampooing ? • To clean the hair and scalp • To improve the condition of the hair and scalp • To prepare for further hairdressing services • To remove products from the hair

  3. What is shampoo? • Shampoo is a detergent known as lauryl sulphate • Additives are used to make different types of shampoo’s • Can you make a list of different types of shampoo’s used in the salon?

  4. Detergent • Detergent is a de-greasing agent • Continual shampooing will de-greasy your hands and dry the natural oils • Contact dermatitis can result from neglect of not drying your hands properly and not putting back some oils in the form of hand cream

  5. Why don’t we use soap? • Hard water and soap produce scum • Scum is difficult to rinse out of the hair leaving it dull and coated

  6. What is hard water? • Hard water has impurities from the earth that has been dissolved through the water chain • There are two types of hard water • Temporary and permanent

  7. Temporary hard water • Boiling water will remove the dissolved impurities • Or by passing through a water softener

  8. Permanent hard water • The salts in this type of water can only be removed by passing it through a commercial water softener

  9. Distilled water (soft water) • This water has no impurities • It is made by boiling the water to produce steam • This steam is then collected and turned back into water • Distilled water can be used for diluting liquid peroxide

  10. Ph value • The ph value is a chart showing Acid and Alkali • This is from 1 (acid) to 14 (alkali) • Acid closes the cuticle, alkali opens the cuticle. • Distilled water has a ph of 7

  11. What is the ph of the following? • The skins natural oil (sebum) • What is the ph of shampoo? • What is the ph of conditioner?

  12. Let’s look at the cleansing process • Products and grease cling to the hair • The detergent reacts with the grease by wrapping itself around the grease creating a ball • This is then rinsed away with the water • Detergents produce a good lather and do not form a scum with hard water

Why do we need to shampoo? • Shampooing removes products from the hair • Shampoo acts on the surface of the hair and allows the water to penetrate into the cortex • This enables the hairdresser to see the natural fall of hair • Removes any barriers on the hair which could prevent chemical process developing

  14. Client preparation • What is the salons requirements for client preparation? You may have included: Towel Gown Cape

  15. Massage • Why is massage important when shampooing? • You may have said: Improves scalp condition Relaxing for your client Ensures cleansing • Massage is only using the pads of the finger tips

  16. Massage movements for shampooing • Rotary • Effleurage • Friction

  17. Can you think of which massage movement you would do for the following when shampooing? • Long hair • Short hair • Sparse hair • Abundant amount of hair (thick hair)

Shampooing • Make sure your client is comfortable • Turn on the water and check the temperature on the back of the hand • Apply the water until the hair it is wet all over • Measure the correct amount of shampoo into the hand (not too much and waste it) • Spread shampoo over the wet hair and massage (do not scratch the clients scalp)

  19. Second shampoo • Rinse away the first shampoo from the hair • Second application of shampoo if required (repeat as first) • Rinse and squeeze gentle • Towel dry gentle

  20. Massage movements for conditioning treatments • Effleurage • Petissage

  21. Can you describe which massage movement you would use for conditioning the following? • Long hair • Short hair • Sparse or fine hair • Thick hair • Scalp treatments

  22. Conditioning • After shampooing a conditioner may be required • Measure out the correct amount and spread out evenly over the hair • Massage and either comb to allow the cuticles to lye smooth and leave • Rinse and squeeze gently • Towel dry

  23. Conditioning treatments • Electrical equipment can be used to aid conditioning scalp treatments • Can you think what these electrical aids are? • What safety precautions do we need to consider when using electrical equipment

  24. Comb the hair in preparation for service • The cuticle lies from roots to points • After shampooing the hair can become tangled • Use a large tooth comb and start in the nape area disentangling the hair working up to the crown, side’s and front. • Hair will stretch when wet and snap if care is not taken, avoid tension

  25. What COSHH regulation do you follow when shampooing and conditioning? • Ensure all shampoo is stored correctly • Disposable of any waste products is placed or disposed of correctly • All products are handled in a safe and correct manner (spillages are cleaned up immediately) • All local by laws are followed
