Lab 3: Land Navigation (2) Yingjie Hu
Dead Reckoning • Dead Reckoning is the process of estimating current position based upon a previously determined position and advancing that position based upon known or estimated speeds over elapsed time (distance travelled), and course (direction).
What you are going to do in this lab? Step 1: Find a route between the start point and end point. (The route should have at least four legs). Step 2: Measure the distance and azimuth of each leg. Step 3: Measure the average length of your pace. Step 4: Calculate the number of paces for each leg. Step 5: Follow your route and see if you can get to your destination.
Step 1: Find the route True North MN
Step 2: Measure distance and azimuth Just like what you did in last lab.
Step 3: measure the length of your pace • There is a start line near Ellison Hall, and an end line near Coral Tree Cafe. The distance between the two lines is 100 meters. • Start from the Ellison Hall, and count the number of the paces (N1) you need to get to the end line. Then go back to Ellison Hall, and also count the number of the paces (N2). • Your average pace length is 200/(N1+N2).
Step 4: Calculate the number of pace you need for each leg • The number of pace you need for one leg is: N = distance / (average pace length)
Step 5: Test your route • Go to the start point, follow your route exactly, and see if you can arrive at your destination.
Assignment • Finish Lab 3. • Deadline: next Thursday (Oct. 27th) • After finishing your work, come back to Star Lab and return the compass.
