Preparation for ATLAS SCT/ID Endcap Completion at CERNJo PaterManchester, 4 January 2006
Early 2005: End of SCT Endcap System Tests • ¼ of an endcap disk with modules, services & peripherals • Aim: to examine performance in realistic surroundings • develop effective grounding and shielding scheme • discover problems, feedback into designs The endcap system test sector with 4 modules • Aims were met; paper in preparation (to finish in 2006) on both barrel & endcap systemtests.
SR1 Building Preparation • SR1 = Building on ATLAS site in which inner detector is being constructed • Jan-Aug 2005: testing of completed SCT barrels • July-Sept 2005: SCT 4-barrel assembly • 1st half of 2006: • Barrel SCT-TRT integration & combined testing • SCT endcaps will arrive, be tested and integrated with TRT • 2 distinct physical areas of activity for SCT: • ‘test area’: readout and infrastructure commissioned in early 2005 using system test sector • This area was used for individual SCT barrel testing and will be used for all combined TRT-SCT testing. • Manchester (JP, WP, AP) contributed to test-area commissioning effort by laying and testing fibres and cables, installing interlocks and commissioning module readout • ‘assembly area’: commissioning started mid-2005, nearing completion now • To be used for individual SCT endcap testing and assembly • Most of the commissioning work (planning and execution) being done by Manchester and Geneva Universities.
SR1 Assembly-Area Preparations The basic plan: • Two 1-disc (132-module) systems located in this part of SR1 clean room. • Each system: • 3 RODs, 3 PS crates: 132+12 modules • 1 DAQ PC + shared PC for DCS/environmental • Evaporative cooling • Cable and fibre handling • First system needed by mid-February 2006 • Second system needed by mid-April 2006.
Status of Assembly-area readout • For 1st endcap: • RODs, power supplies installed and operational • Still need to install final cables and fibres on support structure • Evaporative cooling installed and operational • Need to install final pipework from cooling rack to test box location • Other remaining jobs: • Install ground distribution • Install dry-air distribution • Set up DCS (slow controls, interlocks, environmental monitoring) • Should be no problem to be ready for mid-February • 2nd endcap system: basically same jobs remain (will be done in parallel) plus: • Add 2 more RODs to readout crate, test with sector • Add sides and heat exchanger to power supply rack • Build services support structure (materials ordered) • Will be ready by mid-April
2006: Completion of ATLAS SCT Endcaps • Mid-February: arrival of 1st endcap from Liverpool • 3.5 weeks for reception testing • Several days for unpacking and visual inspection • Leak/pressure tests of cooling circuits • Continuity checks to insure connectors still plugged in • Full electrical readout of one or more disks • After verification that no damage in transit: • Installation of thermal enclosure • More electrical testing • Insertion into TRT • Combined SCT-TRT testing • For details see Paul’s talk this session • Repeat with 2nd (Nikhef) endcap, starting probably mid-April.
Later-2006 plans • August: I move to Manchester • start work on FP420 • aim to set up a system test similar to atlas sct • ATLAS physics • get involved with atlas ID upgrade • ??
