Session Outline After attending this session you should know: • how to use the Library Catalogue • how to select and search appropriate online databases • how to access full text electronic journal articles • where other useful subject information and resources are located on the library website • who to contact for more help

  3. Professional Study Skills ‘Formulate and conduct a literature search on an identified topic within the broad area of classroom management’ • Literature search is 25% of your mark • Submission Date: Friday 10th December 2010

Where to start searching • Durham Library Catalogue • Books and e-books • Journals and e-journals • Databases, and other e-resources • Other library catalogues • Journal databases (indexes) list records of: • Articles in journals • Papers in conference proceedings • Other items such as reports, theses

  5. How to conduct a search • Purpose of search? • Decide on your keywords • Do your search • Display and review your results • Modify search if quantity or quality of hits is not suitable for your needs • Mark and save relevant records

  6. Choosing keywords Decide which words describe your topic: • Synonyms • e.g. mentoring, teacher development • Northern American / British terminology • Alternative spellings (and wildcards) • Colo?r (Colour or Color) • Different endings (truncation) • e.g. ment* (mentors, mentoring, mentees) • Combining your terms (AND, OR, NOT)

  7. Modifying your results • Broader and narrower terms • Combining your terms • Eg. (dyslexia OR dyspraxia) AND primary • Limit your search by: • Date of publication • Type of material (eg. book, journal, report) • Language

  8. What to do with your results • Display • Mark relevant records • Save your results • By email • Print • Save to file
