Viking Facts • Although Vikings were raiders , they were also skilled craftspeople ,accomplished traders and great sailors. • The Vikings were very multitalented, but there most amazing feat was shipbuilding. • Viking warriors believed that fighting brought glory to there families. • There is no proof that Vikings had horned helmets.

  3. Vikings • The Vikings come from Norway, Denmark, and Sweden. • These three countries used to be known as Scandinavia • The word Viking means pirate.

  4. Early History • Early Vikings came from the countries Norway, Denmark, and Sweden. These three countries together are known as Scandinavia. • Vikings found the Americas about five hundred years before Christopher Columbus. • The word Viking means pirate.

  5. Short History of the Longship • Ships were first canoes with a dugout design. • By the Iron Age ships were constructed with many overlapping planks.This was known as the clinker design and is still in use today. • A century or two before the Viking age began people built an open ocean-going ship with raised bow and stern. • In the Viking age ships were perfected. They had a dragon shaped head witch was removed during battle because it was more expensive than the rest of the boat.

The Knarr • The Knarr was a cargo ship.Like all ships the Knarr was constructed using the clinker design.It carried things such as cattle, wool, timber and wheat.It was also much shorter and wider • Under full sail the Knarr could travel 10 knots. • Crew members were almost always bailing water.

  7. Side Facts • There were extra oarsmen to take the place of those who were pitched overboard. • Dragon ships can row backwards without turning around

  8. Interesting Facts • The dragon shaped ornament on the longships cost more than the rest of the ship together. • Vikings were not only raider, but skilled craftsmen, shipbuilders, and traitors. • Viking women were expected to do all the work such as stitching sails, spinning wool,and cooking.

  9. Viking Gods • Thor was a god of thunder and the eldest son of Odin. He protected humans against giants of the underworld. • Tiu was the god of war.He had only one arm.Some people believed that it was because he could only bring victory to one side.Others think it was because Loki’s wolf child Fenris had bitten it off.

  10. Viking Gods • Hela was the goddess of death and the underworld.She was the daughter of Loki, the mischievous trickster god. Hela’s body was half flesh colored and half blackish- blue. • Frey and Freya were the two most beloved gods. Frey was the god of weather and harvest.He had a magical sword to conquer the giants of the underworld.

  11. Viking Gods • Fenris was another of Loki’s children. The other gods said he needed to be chained and caged. He only agreed to this if one of the gods put their hand in his mouth. Tiu volunteered. • Odin and Frigga were the leaders of Viking deities. Odin ,who lived in his castle, was the god war, death, and wisdom.Friga was his wife and queen of Asgaurd

  12. Viking Gods • Balder was the son of Frigga and Odin.He was said to have mysterious magical signs engraved on his tongue. He was considered the god of sun. So they named the first day of the week, Sunday, after him.

  14. The Sword • The sword was the most valued weapon of the Viking warrior. The blade was made of iron. It was decorated with runes most of the time.The hilt was made of gold, silver, or copper.The blade was double edged.It had a sharp tip used for thrusting.

  15. The Axe • Sure, the sword was the most prized weapon, but his most used weapon was the battle axe.There were two types of axes, one for throwing and one for hand to hand combat.Vikings were the only people throughout Europe to use axes.

  17. The Helmet • The helmet was supposed to fit tight on a warriors head. If it was loose, it could block his vision and kill him.They were made of leather or metal.Unless a Viking was part of the king’s royal army, he had to make his own clothes, weapons, and armor.

  18. Viking Armor • Vikings usually wore a leather hide jacket.The jacket was warm and tough.Underneath that was a wool tunic. A little silver Thor’s hammer charm for good luck hung around their neck.Helmets like this one were never made.

  19. Solving Mysteries • Most of the time you see a Viking with a horned helmet ,however these were never invented. Most helmets were made of leather or a cone shaped metal. • Vikings were not only murderers and raiders. • Vikings found the Americas 500 years before Columbus.
