  9. Heritability • Proportion of the superiority in an individual which can be passed on to the offspring. • Proportion of the differences in individuals which is due to genetics (additive). • Only the additive component since a sperm or egg has individual genes, not gene combinations.

  13. Response to Selection • R = h2 x S • Where: • R is the response • h2 is the heritability • S is the selection differential • Selection differential: • Difference between individuals selected to be parents and the average of the entire herd

  14. Does Genetic Change Always Yield Phenotypic Change?? Year to year variation causes phenotypic change to vary from year to year.

  15. Generation Interval • Average time to replace a parent in population • Average age of parents when offspring are born • NOT average age when first offspring are born • 3-4 years – bulls 4.5-6 years – cows
