Possible Causes of Delirium Hypoxia: decreased SaO2 levels Sleep deprivation Systemic infection Head trauma Drug intoxication Poisoning Renal Failure
Goals of Study • Collect SaO2 data using pulse oximetry from appropriate subjects. • The SaO2 data will be analyzed to determine if there is a correlation between periods of hypoxia while in the ICU and a decline in mental/physical function.
Between VA, VUMC, and Meharry Medical College, 80% of patients that enter the cardiac-pulminary ICU exit with some form of delerium • At 6 month check-ups, 30% of patients still show some form of delerium • Nashville, TN is ranked as the 25th largest city in the U.S. according to 2000 census data Why is it a good idea to build this?
Our Advantage • We have access to software as students that would otherwise cost thousands of dollars. • LabView • Design Safe • Innovation Workbench • We offer a product that is “custom” built. • Analysis systems designed to generate output as specified by the doctors we are working with • The responsibility is on us to make sure that this is usable to our doctors.
Project Description • Data Types: • ECG • Oxygen sat. number • pulse rate found by pulse-ox. • Algorithm includes: • Comparisons of ECG and pulse-ox pulse • Sampling rate • Identification procedures • Categories of Assignment
Pulse-ox machine Data stream and DAQcard Connects pulse-ox to computer Filters stream for Pulse-ox # Computer Data processing And Storage LabView Evaluates data And converts to Useable form Collects data Acts as ADC Access Places data in groups To be recalled in queries Stores data Under specific File names
Project Description • Access • RS-232 connecting monitor to LabView • Central access • VA’s eclipsis • VUMC and VA’s nurse’s station • Metro General’s data network
Facilities VUMC and VA Metro General
Facilities’ Issues: Vanderbilt • Contact: Julie Foss (Nurse manager), Brenda Truman (RN, MSN), Raymond McIntire (BME Electronics) • OPTIONS FOR DESIGN • Individual unit • Bronch lab • Use is limited • Different model • Central Nurse’s station • Access very limited • MOST FEASIBLE OPTION: Acquire data from individual monitor, trials to be set up in VA hospital
Facilities’ Issues: VA • Contact: Dr. Thomason (MD), John Watts (BME Dept), Bill Robertson (ICU Nurse) • OPTIONS FOR DESIGN • Individual unit • Very accessible • Eclipsis data • Central Nurse’s station • Non-accessible • MOST FEASIBLE OPTION: Use eclipsis system to gain access to information stream and store in Access.
Facilities’ Issues: Metro General • Contact: Roberto Cruz-Gervis (MD), Kenneth Warren (Facilities manager), Cathy Morgan (Chief Nurse ICU), Randall McNeese (BME Dept.) • OPTIONS FOR DESIGN • Individual unit • Different from VUMC and VA • Highly accessible • Central nurse’s station • Highly accessible • Pull stream of data off network • MOST FEASIBLE OPTION: Network interface or central nurse’s station
