Advanced Placement (AP)International Baccalaureate (IB)Dual Credit / Early College January 2017
Objectives • SPHS Advanced Studies Philosophy • AP / IB / DC: • Philosophy • Structure and scheduling • Assessments • Success and advantages • Costs • Questions
SPHS Adv. Studies Philosophy Open Enrollment • ALL students with the pre-requisites and skills necessary for success are encouraged to enroll in advanced courses • All programs and courses are valued at SPHS • Students should make decisions for AP/IB/DC courses based on strengths, weaknesses, learning and testing styles, and their goals
AP Philosophy • Individual courses for areas of strength • Study subjects in greater depth and detail • National standards • Demonstrate readiness for college
AP Courses and Schedules*courses must have a minimum of 15 students
AP Assessment • AP score of 1-5 based only on May AP exam • Multiple choice • Short answer • Essay • Timed • Most colleges require AP score of 3 or higher to earn college credit • Must take the AP exam to get the higher GPA weighting • Do not have to take the AP course to take the AP exam
AP Advantages • Higher GPA weighting • College credit awarded (with acceptable scores) • Preparation for college level work in the subject area • No cost
Costs Associated with AP The State of SC pays for all exam fees for AP exams.
IB Philosophy • 2 year program with additional core components: TOK, EE, CAS • Range and depth within subjects, integration among subjects and international perspectives • International standards with ability to earn the internationally-recognized IB Diploma • Knowledge and skills for success in the college environment
IB CoursesCourses taught over a two-year period English ---- paired ---- History of the Americas Math Studies ---- paired ---- Biology Math Chemistry Theater ---- paired ---- Spanish ab initio Psychology Spanish Some courses allow for student choice of Standard Level or Higher Level to customize program to strengths and weaknesses.
IB - Course vs. Full Diploma • Can also take only 2 IB courses or 4 IB courses (which can be supplemented with AP or dual credit courses as scheduling allows) • These are IB COURSE students, not full diploma program • No additional core components (TOK, EE, CAS) or support structures
IB Assessment Underlying philosophy: to give students an opportunity to demonstrate what they know, rather than find out what they don’t know. • IB score of 1-7 based on May (senior year) IB exams AND additional assessed components within each course Exams: Short answer Add. components: presentations Essay labs Timed written work projects • Most colleges require IB score of 4 or higher in Higher Level courses to earn college credit • Must complete all assessed components to get the higher GPA weighting
IB ADVANTAGES • Higher GPA weighting • College credit awarded in Higher Level courses (with acceptable scores) • Students “place out” of Standard Level classes with placement exam (Math, Foreign Language, etc.) • Writing and research skills, critical-thinking skills • Soft skills such as collaboration, time management, etc.
Cost of the IB Program • The parent pays a portion of the registration fee: $105.00* flat fee for full diploma students or course students • The state of SC and Rock Hill School District pay for the remainder of the registration fee and the subject area exam fees. *cost subject to change
Example Comparison: AP and IB English • AP English Lang (11th year awarded Eng. 101) • AP English Lit (12th year awarded Eng. 102) • IB English HL (11th/12th years awarded Eng. 101 and Eng. 102) Generally same college credit awarded; same GPA weighting So examine learning style and testing style of each course IB: 2 Paper/Pencil Exams; Oral Commentary; Oral presentation; Written Essays *Portfolio of your work* AP: 1 Paper/Pencil Exam (multiple choice; short answer; essay)
Philosophy of Dual Credit Courses • Complete college-level courses while still enrolled in high school • Earn dual credit (high school and college credit) because courses include both college and high school requirements
Dual Credit Courses4 Year Transfer • English 101 and 102, USC-L • Psychology 101, USC-L • Criminal Justice 101, USC-L • Teacher Cadet 101, Winthrop • Project Lead the Way Courses, USC
Requirements for Dual Credit • USC-L classes • 3.0 cumulative GPA • Teacher Cadet 101, WU • Overall 3.0 GPA or higher, teacher recommendation, and application
ProjectLead The Way University of South Carolina • Introduction to Engineering Design • Principles of Engineering • Digital Electronics
College Credit for PLTW Engineering Courses • At end of each PLTW course, register to USC. • Student must have an 1100 SAT or overall B average in high school to register. • Student must take the PLTW College Exam and score a 70 or above. • Student earns Dual Credit weighting for the PLTW course IF these qualifications are met.
Dual Credit Assessment • Credit is earned based on the overall grade in the course • Assignments and assessments are given as they are in the course taught on the college campus • Starts a college transcript
Dual Credit Advantages • Higher GPA weighting • Credit earned is not dependent upon a score from a national/international exam • Dual Credit courses in core areas are transferable to all in-state public colleges, some out-of-state public colleges, and a few private colleges (Check with your college of interest to see how courses transfer) • Certain circumstances result in little to no cost, especially compared to the $900.00+ cost for courses at the colleges
Dual Credit Costs • USC-Lancaster (each course) • $285.00 for 3-hour course or possibly eligible for no cost if student takes 6 hrs/sem (Lottery Tuition) • Cost of textbooks • Winthrop • $0.00-30.00 • University of South Carolina • $198.00 each course PLTW COSTS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE.
Cost: When Do I Pay? USC-L and Winthrop: Students register before the course begins. Money is due before the course begins; each school will provide those deadlines. USC (PLTW Engineering courses): At the end of the course student registers to USC, takes EOC college exam and money is due
