  1. Welcome to United States History 2! Mr. Genatossio’sclassroom

  2. My Background • Graduated from Xaverian Brothers High School ‘99, Occidental College(Obama!) in 2003 • Taught ESL in Taiwan from 2005-2009 in Taiwan to all age ranges. • Taught US History at English High School as part of an M.ED through Boston Teacher Residency.

  3. Essential Questions for the year • Everything we study this year comes back to these four dominant questions: • To what extent is the story of the United States a story of progress? • What individuals or groups have been denied their rights throughout American History? What was the basis for the denial? • How have individuals and groups fought back against discrimination to make themselves part of the American story? • Who has historically been considered an American? Who is considered an American today? How has this changed over time?

  4. Classroom Expectations • Students will come to class with: a notebook, pen, and stapler or glue. • Students are expected to respect themselves, each other, and learning. • Checking the class blog and the class gradebook to stay up to date on all class materials/resources and their progress.

  5. Projects/assignments • Every unit, students will complete: • a major project. Major projects are always writing based. • an exam. • Homework every night. Students have great flexibility in what this looks like.

  6. Grading • Major assessments 40% • Your children have enormous control over this by becoming active participants in the drafting, feedback, and revising loop before assignments are due, as well as self assessing. • Participation 20% • Taking class notes, listening to other students, completing independent work. • Notebook checks/homework 40% • Organizing notebooks, submitting assignments on time. • All grades will be posted to www.jupitergrades.com and pushed to parents e-mail addresses and cell phones bi-weekly.

  7. Grading continued • At the end of each term, students will turn in a collection of their work, like a portfolio. • Students will self grade their work and conference with me to determine what their grade should be. • If you are nervous about this system, I invite you to analyze the work with us and collaborate on your child’s grades.

  8. Contact Info • Phone number: 617-947-7157 • Email: Sgenatossio@gmail.com • Blog: Us2history.posterous.com • Once I gather all your contact information, I plan to schedule weekend office hours in your communities at local cafes. I can also schedule appointments after school.
