  4. Exoskeleton Made from Chitin – a tough, protective, semi-transparent substance forming the principle component of exoskeletons. Like the chocolate cover of a M & M.

  5. Carl Linnaeus • Founder of the naming system for classifying organisms that we know today. • Used categories from broadest to most specific Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species. • Genus and Species are written in Latin.

  10. What are these? They both look like the Monarch, but the one on the left is Danausgilippusand the one on the right is Danausplexippus. Same Genus, different Species. Their common names being Queen and Monarch.

Why is classifying important? • A scientific way to classify all organisms so everyone knows EXACTLY what species is discussed and they are able to be identified. • Aides in memory – easily group things together based on similar characteristics. • Part of a Scientist's job is to make sense of the world around us. They can do this much easier if everything is arranged in a system.
