Follow it precisely! PLEASE READ THIS EQUIPMENT LIST & THE BUYING GUIDE CAREFULLY THEY HAVE BEEN CREATED WITH YOUR BEST INTERESTS IN MIND.
What to Bring Toiletries - toothbrush and paste, hairbrush, soap, shampoo. (If you bring deodorant – roll on only, no aerosols.) 2 x 1L water bottles - Strong, durable & leak proof. Camelbak/bladder type is OK for one of these. Torch - Small, lightweight. Head torches are ideal (bring spare batteries). Personal first aid kit - Should contain: lip balm (protects against dry lips due to exposure to the elements), asthma inhaler, Band-Aids, sports strapping tape etc. Spare pads / tampons. Towel Spare plastic bags - 8 x large garbage bags Sunscreen 30+ Insect repellent - Small roll on. No aerosol please.
What to Bring:Clothing • 2 x Wool/fleece beanie - Must be able to pull down over the ears (wool or polarfleece). • Sun hat, sun glasses - Full brimmed - floppy or cricket hat. No peak caps. • 3 x shirts - 1 Long-sleeved cotton, with collar (College shirts / business shirt) 1 short sleeve shirt with collar – eg polo shirt, College sports shirt. 1 spare. • 2 x jumpers - Must have 1 woollen jumper, and 1 polar fleece or wool. NO COTTON!! • 2 x pants - 1 pair of warm trackpants and 1 pair lightweight trackpants / hiking pants. • 2 x shorts - quick dry and knee length – ieboardshorts. • 3 x pairsSocks Wool blend hiking socks are best. NO COTTON or sports/ankle socks.
What to Bring:Clothing • 2 x Thermal tops - Polypropylene or wool • 2 x Thermal pants - Polypropylene or wool • Underwear - A change for each day. • Hiking boots / shoes - Strong comfortable shoes for walking. Sneakers / cross trainers are OK. • River Shoes - Must be enclose the toe and hold firmly onto the foot with laces or straps, and it’s ok if they get wet and muddy. Old runner work well. • Bathers - For swimming. One piece. • Pyjamas - For this trip might PJ’s might be the second pair of thermals • Gloves or mittens - Wool, thermal or fleece
Medical: Personal medical requirements must be clearly labeled, be in its commercial packaging and instructions provided from the student’s doctor or pharmacist. • All medications must be handed to the accompanying teacher prior to departure. • Bedding: • Sleeping bag – WATER PROOF IT AT HOME Good quality warm sleeping bag with hood, that packs up small. • Sheet liner (optional) - To protect the sleeping bag and gives extra warmth. • Sleeping mat - Small closed-cell foam or light weight Therm-a-Rest mat is suitable. • Optional extras: • Spare pair of pants • Camera - In waterproof bag. • Playing cards • Frisbee / Hacky Sack
Items provided by St Leonard’s Backpack – bring all your clothes in a suitcase/bag from home, it will be stored at school till you repack into them Friday afternoon to head home. Waterproof jacket - Gore-Tex or japara, must have hood. Over pants - Gore-Tex or japara. Paddling Kit – including: paddle, type 2 PFD, Helmet and waterproof paddle jacket. (provided once on the river)
What NOTto bring NO cotton based materials, check the label of every garment before packing. NO Electronic devices including Phones, I-pods, portable gaming devices, etc.
Preparing Snacks for a 5 day adventure • Sultanas, raisins, currents • Dried fruit • Yogurt or fruit chews • Seeds • Chocolate (M n M’s) are best • Rice crackers • Jerky • jubes, natural jellies, mints • Anzac biscuits • Muesli bars NO NUTS or SESAME SEEDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Glycaemic index The glycaemic index, (GI) provides a measure of how quickly blood sugar levels rise after eating a particular type of food. Food that is High GI means that sugar is quickly available after eating food eg lollies. Be warned however as soon as that sugar is used you feel worse and more tired than you did before the sugar. Therefore food that is Low GI means sugar is released slowly and energy levels can be more sustained. We need both low and high GI foods in our snacks in the outdoors for optimum performance, comfort and most importantly to avoid symptoms associated with HANGRY!!! High Low
How to make scroggin Purchase all ingredients Combine all ingredients in a large bowl Stir the ingredients until combined Separate the scroggin mix over 5 snap lock bags evenly Try not to eat it
