  1. Building a Chickenosaurus And Bringing Back the Neanderthals By: Riad Sabbagh Ammar Al Salhi Katie Odonnell http://chickenosaurusandneandrethals.wikispaces.com/

  2. Chickenosaurus • Scientists are in the process of building a dinosaur from the embryo of a chicken

  3. Why build a Chickenosaurus? • This experiment is being done in order to determine if evolution can be reversed • To demonstrate that birds are the direct descendants of dinosaurs

  4. Birds are Dinosaurs • There is enough similarity between the fossils of dinosaurs and modern birds to conclude that birds did indeed evolve from dinosaurs.

  5. Birds are Dinosaurs • Birds have very similar body structures to dinosaurs • Furcula/wishbone

  6. Feathered Dinosaurs Scientific researchers have discovered that Dinosaurs such the Velociraptor were feathered

  7. Birds and Dinosaurs • Growth rate • Both birds and dinosaurs grow very quickly

  8. Birds and Dinosaurs • Eyes • High developed sense of sight • The forward facing eyes

  9. Birds and Dinosaurs • Bones • Both Dinosaurs and birds have hollow bones which help them in different ways

  10. Birds and Dinosaurs • Respiratory System • Birds have a continues supply of new oxygen because their hollow bones actually become part of their respiratory systems.

  12. Chick Embryo Development • As the embryo transforms there is a brief period of time when it takes on dinosaur traits • Suddenly a genetic switch flips • Tail disappears and five fingers become three • Looks much more like a bird

  13. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LKvez9duEHQ&feature=fvw

  14. Why Does a Chicken Not Become a Dinosaur? • Homeobox genes (or hox genes), choose the location of the various body parts • Evolution can also depend on when these genetic switches turn on and off • In chickens, it seems that the tail is turned off early, which causes it to stop developing • This was altered with fruit flies

  15. How To build a Chickenosaurus • Injecting florescent dyes • Transplants • Use of drugs • Suppressing the proteins in an embryo that suppress dinosaur-like characteristics. • Managed to produce one specimen with a couple of extra vertebrae • Discovered a mutant chicken with a complete set of teeth

  16. Pros to the Chickenosaurus • Cheaper food that’s more accessible • The chicken will be bigger • The growth of the tail is tied to the growth of the spinal cord, and spinal cord birth defects in humans are a major medical problem.

  17. Cons to the Chickenosaurus • Will require a lot of money for research • Back tracking human embryo • Lots of animals may get hurt Example: dolly the sheep

  18. Neanderthals-What are they? Cavemen The closest relative to modern day humans Gorillas -> Neanderthals-> Homo Sapiens Homo Neanderthalensis

  19. Physical Features Eyebrow bone More hair than humans Jaws leaned back Around 5’ft More physical strength than humans

  20. Brief History Lived mostly in Europe Appeared 230,000 years ago Died out around 24,000 years ago

  21. Why are they extinct? Many theories including: Habitat changes Competition with homo sapiens Ice age/ major changes in climate

  22. How would we Bring them Back Done very much the same way and they would with the chickenosarus Involves finding the genetic genome of a Neanderthal Instead of chicken embryo use human Embryo

  23. Why we should bring them back Medical purposes. The technology to clone a genome of a Neanderthal could be applied to humans.

  24. Why we should bring them back Ethical issues. Some people believe that we as humans should bring Neanderthals back because we “owe it to them.”

  25. Why we shouldn't bring back the Neanderthals Huge minority-They wouldn't fit in for thousands of years. Unethical- Use them for our benefits (run scientific tests on them). Costs money Human rights- They would get general rights that protect them
