  3. The Basics • India’s first civilization began along the Indus River • India’s first civilization built huge, planned cities like Harappa and Mohenjo Daro • India’s first civilization is called the Harappan Civilization

  4. The Basics • Harappan civilization changed in 1500 BCE when they were invaded by the Aryan people • How did the Aryans conquer the Harappans? Aryans were nomadic warriors who had horses and iron weapons Harappans were sedentary farmers who had cows and bronze tools

  5. The Basics The Aryans created a strict social/ political system in India The Caste System Brahmins- Priests Kshatriyas- Warrior kings Vaisyas- Skilled workers Sudras- Farmers Untouchables-garbage & toilet cleaners, street sweepers

  6. The Basics The caste system was a strict social/political system because People were born into their social class They did not move out of their social class People accepted their place in the caste system because they believed they could be reborn into a new and better kife

  7. Hinduism • The caste system became an important part of Hinduism, India’s first organized religion The basic beliefs of Hinduism are • All living things are reborn into a new life • Karma determines what your next life will be • Good karma helps you achieve Nirvana

  8. Hinduism Key Terms • Atman= a person’s soul • Karma= a person’s actions during their life • Reincarnation= rebirth into a new life • Samsara= the constant cycle of life, death, and rebirth • Nirvana= the end of samara when the atman becomes one with the supreme god or Brahman
