GEO809 Fachexkursion: Research and Monitoring of the Alpine Cryosphere in a Swiss Mountain Valley Isabelle Gärtner-Roer Samuel Nussbaumer Michael Zemp
General scope of module • This excursion • introduces the research and monitoring of the Alpine Cryosphere, • discusses early and on-going projects in a high mountain valley, • as well as related environmental and socio-cultural topics. • Thereby this module consists of • an introductory course during the spring semester • and a three-day excursion in summer. • Besides the thematic issues, you will learn to • apply your knowledge from GEO311 (Glacier & Permafrost)and GEO807 (Monitoring of the Cryosphere), • efficiently read and present (scientific and other) publications, • and to combine your gained (theoretical) knowledge with (field) observations during the excursion.
Specific scope for excursion in 2014 • The summer excursion in 2013 will take us to the Jungfrau –Aletsch Region, Switzerland, with a special focus on • reconstructed fluctuations of Grindelwaldgletscher, • in-situ and airborne observations of Aletschgletscher, • permafrost research at Jungfrau, • ice core research at Fiescherhorngletscher, • and greenhouse gas monitoring at Jungfraujoch. • As geographers, we will also cover related environmental and socio-cultural topics, such as the • ice avalanche, glacier lake outburst and rock fall events around Grindelwald, • mountaineering in the Jungfrau-Aletsch Region, • history and architecture of Konkordia alpine hut, • and the relevance of hydropower for the regional and national power supply.
Excursion route • Grindelwald (1034 m ü.M.) • Unt. Grindelwaldgletscher • Kleine Scheidegg (2’061 m ü.M.) • Jungfraujoch (3’454 m ü.M.) • Aletschfirn • Konkordiahütte (2’850 m ü.M.) • Märjelensee (2’348 m ü.M.) • Fiesch(1’049 m ü.M.)
Some logistics about the excursion • Preliminary programme for excursion • 3 days in August (week 34/35) • start: TUE morning in Zürich • train to Grindelwald • end: THU evening in Fiesch, train to Zürich • overnight stays: Kleine Scheidegg and Konkordia-Hütte • Further information • Limited to 15 participants (& waiting list; for excursion only) • 2.0 ECTS for full module (introductory course & excursion) • estimated costs of c. 300.- CHF (ev. half of transportation costs covered by GIUZ) • High mountain fitness requirements (SAC-Skala T4): • Alpinwandern: Vertrautheit mit exponiertem Gelände. Stabile Trekkingschuhe. Gutes Orientierungsvermögen. Alpine Erfahrung. Bei Wetterumschwung kann ein Rückzug schwierig werden. Harness & Crampons • participants are responsible for insurance coverage
Your tasks for the introductory course • (1) Complete list of participants • (2) Scientific paper • select one of the proposed papers • get the original paper • read the paper (and ev. related sources) • write a two-page summary (incl. key figures and tables) • (3) Related environmental and socio-cultural topics • select one of the proposed topics • compile information about that topic from various sources • write a two-page summary (incl. key figures and tables) • (4) Presentation of paper and topic in next introductory courses • 5 minute presentation • max of five MS PPT slides
Some guidance for your tasks • Scientific paper reading • First read abstract, intro, conclusions, and reference list • Secondly look at figures & tables • Finally get the details from data and method sections, results, and discussion • Written summary • What is it about? • Data & methods used? • Main results? (=> key figure & table) • Outlook? • Use WORD template for your summary! • Presentation of paper and topic in next introductory courses • Follow the (above) structure of your summary • One slide = one minute • => Summary in EN or DE; presentation in EN
