The Future of Road Safety in a Technological World How will technology impact the practice of Road Safety? Dr Paul Tyler | Senior Research Engineer October 2015
Introduction • The world is a changing place • Never more so than now • Telephone Mobile Smartphone • Disruptive Change • Kodak / uberX • Disruptive change in the road system • Impact of technology on the practice of Road Safety The Future of Road Safety in a Technological World. How will technology impact the practice of Road Safety? | Dr. Paul Tyler
Where am I coming from…. Work in IT research Help bring technology to new areas Worked on projects in traffic signal control, video detection of vehicles and cooperative intelligent transport systems. Exposure to the Road Safety field. Significant technological change is coming to road usage. This will change the risks with road travel and so the practice of road safety. A (very) brief history of Road Safety • Red Flag Laws • Vehicle Improvements • Laminated windows, Crumple zones, Safety Cell, Side Impact protection, Seat Belts, Airbags • Driver behaviour • Speeding, Alcohol and drugs, young / inexperienced drivers, distraction, fatigue • RBT, speed cameras, graduated licensing, regulation of mobile device use, heavy vehicle driver regulations … The Future of Road Safety in a Technological World. How will technology impact the practice of Road Safety? | Dr. Paul Tyler
Current Focus of Road Safety • Strong focus on the role of the driver • ARSRPE 2014 topics included: Young Drivers, Older Drivers, Driver Impairment, Speeding, Driver Behaviour, Enforcement and Education. • ARSC 2015 topics are similar. • Safer Systems & acknowledging human error • Some work in infrastructure, vehicles and with specific user groups. Recent Technology • Focus on mitigating the driver risks • Driver assist technology introduced to production vehicles: • Warning / Alert systems such as: Forward Collision, Lane Departure, Reversing Proximity, Blind Spot Detection • Automated systems such as: Adaptive Cruise Control, Emergency Brake Assist, Autonomous Emergency Braking, Electronic Stability Control, Lane keeping assist, curve assist, automatic parking The Future of Road Safety in a Technological World. How will technology impact the practice of Road Safety? | Dr. Paul Tyler
Recent Technology – Warning Systems • New technology often starts as an alert based system eg FCW • System detects a risk, informs driver, driver responds. • Do these risk mitigation technologies introduce new risks? • If warning systems become widespread, there could be a negative impact on road safety. • Human Factors researchers are looking at this but more can be done. The Future of Road Safety in a Technological World. How will technology impact the practice of Road Safety? | Dr. Paul Tyler
Recent Technology – Automated Systems Warning systems often evolve to automated systems Autonomous Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) This style of automation is for short periods of time. Theory is that risk is reduced by overriding the driver. However does this risk mitigation technology introduce new risks? There is some research is looking at these issues but a lot more could be done. The Future of Road Safety in a Technological World. How will technology impact the practice of Road Safety? | Dr. Paul Tyler
Automated Systems– Driver Managed • Driver managed, longer periods of control • Human factors possibly underestimated: eg • situational awareness • Transition between control modes • Driver understanding • Human factors • Could a vehicle hand back control of an uncontrollable vehicle? • Do drivers even use the automated technology? The Future of Road Safety in a Technological World. How will technology impact the practice of Road Safety? | Dr. Paul Tyler
Future Automation – Two Possible Paths • Both seek to reduce the risk posed by a human driver • Increasing automation through driver assist • Driver has ultimate responsibility • Can take over / override • May by a path to full automation • Direct to Fully Automated • Vehicle handles all situations • No driver necessary The Future of Road Safety in a Technological World. Increasing Automation The Future of Road Safety in a Technological World. How will technology impact the practice of Road Safety? | Dr. Paul Tyler
Future Automation – Role of the Driver In an Increasing automation future: What role will the driver play in a highly automated vehicle? Can humans perform that role adequately? Airline industry & autopilot? The Future of Road Safety in a Technological World. How will technology impact the practice of Road Safety? | Dr. Paul Tyler
Future Automation – Full Automation In a fully automated vehicle: Does it need a “driver” What role do the occupants have in contributing to a safe road environment? What is the failsafe strategy? Will the community accept fully automated vehicles? The Future of Road Safety in a Technological World. How will technology impact the practice of Road Safety? | Dr. Paul Tyler
Future Automation –mixed modes In a vehicle that has many modes – manual control to full automation What are reasonable handover procedures between modes? How might multiple modes confuse the driver? Can such a vehicle always assume a driver is available to fall back to a manual mode? The Future of Road Safety in a Technological World. How will technology impact the practice of Road Safety? | Dr. Paul Tyler
Future Issues for Road Safety • Two fundamental questions for new technology: • Does it reduce overall risk? • Does it introduce new risk and if so, how can they be mitigated? • Changing role of the driver • If a technology reduces risk and it is fitted to a vehicle, should its use be compulsory? The Future of Road Safety in a Technological World. How will technology impact the practice of Road Safety? | Dr. Paul Tyler
Conclusions • Change ahead is inevitable. • Technology will mitigate many of the risks of having human drivers • Technology will introduce new risks - new roles for drivers and/or vehicle operators. • Be prepared or it may catch you unaware • Embrace technology that reduces risk. • Work to mitigate new risks from new technology.
