  1. Chapter 2 Earth Structure

  2. Crust • Thin rocky out layer of Earth where we live

  3. Lithosphere • The crust and the solid upper layer of the mantle

  4. Mantle • The thick middle layer of Earth

  5. Asthenosphere • The solid but plastic layer found in the upper mantle on which the crust plate sits

  6. Core • The dense metallic center of Earth • Outer Core –liquid • Inner Core – solid iron ball

  7. Landform • Features sculpted by processes on Earth’s surface or resulting from forces with in Earth

  8. Uplift • Process that moves Earth’s surface to a higher elevation

  9. Erosion • The process of wearing away of rock and soil

  10. Rock • A natural, solid mixture of mineral crystal particles

  11. Rock Cycle • The series of processes that turn one rock into another rock

  12. Density • The amount of matter an object has per unit of volume D=Mass/volume

  13. Lava • Molten , liquid rock material found on Earth’s surface

  14. Magma • is molten material found beneath Earth’s surface. • The type and amount of elements present in the magma help determine which minerals will form as it cools. • Small crystals form from rapidly cooling magma and large crystals form from slowly cooling magma.
