The Assyrians • The Assyrian Empire arose about 1,000 years after the rule of Hammurabi. • The Assyrian army was the first large army to use iron weapons. Their weapons were stronger than those of copper and tin. • They fought with spears, daggers, bows, and arrows, chariots, and soldiers on horseback. • The capital of the Assyrian Empire was Nineveh.
Assyrians Continued: *The empire was divided into provinces, which are political districts. Each province was governed by an official who collected taxes and enforced laws. *Built large temples and palaces, with statues and wall carvings *One of the first libraries was in Nineveh and held 25,000 tablets of stories and songs.
Assyrians Continued… • Assyrians were ferocious warriors: attacking cities, burning buildings, and carrying away people and goods. • They forced people from their lands and moved them into foreign territory. • Their cruel treatment of people lead to many rebellions and the empire eventually fell to the Chaldeans.
The Chaldeans • Nebuchadnezzar was the king of the Chaldeans. • The Chaldeans captured the Assyrian capital of Nineveh. This caused the Assyrian Empire to crumble. • The Chaldeans were descendants of the Babylonian people which made up the Hammurabi empire 1200 years earlier.
Chaldeans Continued…. • The Chaldeans controlled all of Mesopotamia from 605B.C. to 562 B.C. • They rebuilt the city of Babylon and this became the center of the Chaldean empire. • Babylon became the richest and largest city in the world. • Larger brick walls surrounded the city and in the center were majestic palaces and temples.
Chaldeans continued: • Chaldeans were merchants, artisans, and traders. Babylon was a major trade route. • The Chaldeans made one of the first sun-dials and were the first to have a seven-day.-week • Chaldeans lost their empire to thePersians and Mesopotamia became part of the new Persian Empire.
