Wind-Aid Preliminary Design Review 29 January 2008 Andy Crutchfield Keri Macaulay James Gates David Rupp John Wloch
Problem Statement Wind-Aid • Convert wind energy to storable electric energy • Easily deployable (compact, portable, robust) • Operate in wind speed of nominally 15 mph (wind speed varies over a 24 hr. period from 0-30 mph – so need a storage capability) • Power an emergency communication system with 20W at 12V continuous DC • Able to be carried on a person’s back or dropped from a helicopter at 20ft without a parachute
Current Status – On Schedule • Key Design Requirements • Transporter • Lightweight (<40lbs) • Compact (12”x18”x36”) • Operator • Easy to use (no training necessary) • Easy to set up (by one person in <1hr) • Operates a communications device (20W at 12V) • Can operate under varying wind conditions (store 18 hrs of energy and operate in 7-30 mph wind) • Easy to assemble (done by 1 person) • Relief Organization • Cost (<$2000) • Durable (lasts >1 mo.) • Potential Design Solutions • Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT) • Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) • WindBelt Wind-Aid
Last Week • Action Items: • Created design requirements • Quantitative and qualitative • Individual Concept Memos • Shared concepts in group brainstorming session • Began work on webpage • Began to convert brainstorming into a cohesive concept • Researched suggested options • Developed PDR format • Group project planning Wind-Aid
Next Week • Action Items: • Analysis on turbine design (HAWT v. VAWT v. WindBelt) • Further, quantitative research • Investigate electric generators • Continue to construct webpage • Choose final concept • Discuss potential topics for trade studies • Show Stoppers: • Adding frames to webpage • Ensuring feasibility of final concept choice Wind-Aid
