What is infrared photography? Is a technique that allows us to capture the lighting spectrum in between 700 and 1200 nanometers (not visible for the human eye). It has artistic and scientific applications.
Filters Block all the visible light, letting only the infrared light pass. The most popular ones are: Tiffen Hoya Kodak
Artistically Weird tonalities and colors
Scientifically Astronomy, Police investigations, medicine
Digital Infrared Photography The digital sensor in most cameras is quite sensitive to infrared radiation, and in fact manufacturers put right in front of it a special filter called “Hot Mirror” or “IR Cut-off Filter” to block radiation outside the visible range from reaching the sensor (we shall simply call this filter 'hot mirror' from now on). This in fact may create a loss of sharpness and also possibly inaccurate exposures.
Digital Infrared Photography This filter blocks every radiation that falls below the deep red but does not eliminate it completely, and therefore we can use it at our advantage because in spite of the presence of the hot mirror there is still some IR radiation left that the sensor can capture. We will see below that this often comes with some serious disadvantages, however.
