  2. Who’s in the Room?Stand if you… Traveled out of Missouri this summer. Have a sibling at North. Are an only child. Consider yourself a foodie. Read for fun (honestly). Are an early riser. Have an after-school job. Play a fall sport at North. Play a musical instrument. Speak a language other than English. Like Kanye West. Are a vegetarian or vegan. Know a good (clean) joke.

  3. About Me • Born in Coffeyville, Kansas. Grew up (mostly) in Ballwin, MO • BS in English and MS in Education from Maryville University • Mom to Mason, born 2012 • Likes: Books (obviously), sports, and being with my family

  4. What’s your mindset? Agree or Disagree? • Intelligence is something very basic about you that you can’t change. • You can learn new things, but you really can’t change how smart you are. • You are a certain kind of person; not much can change it. • You can do things differently, but the important parts about your character can’t change.

Policies • Homework • Do it • You will be assigned to interventions if you don’t • Take advantage of make-up windows • ½ credit taken off for late work • Tests and Writing • Serve as assessment of your mastery of skills • Retesting and revision opportunities will be available • Grading • Major Assignments: 60% • Daily Assignments: 30% • Final Synthesis: 10%

  12. What does it mean to be “American”? • In groups of 2-3, share your thoughts about this question. • How do Americans see themselves? • What characteristics do Americans seem to share? • What do Americans seem to value (think is important)? • How do outsiders view Americans/American culture?

  13. Views on America • Voices from Lady Libery • How do these views compare with the values and characteristics you discussed in your groups? What factors influence how America is seen by Americans? Outsiders?

American Values and characteristics • Look at the ads given to your group. • Discuss the ads with your groups to determine what they tell us about American values (what we think is important) OR characteristics • List the values/characteristics your group sees. • Write your findings on the class list. Put a star next to an item if another group has already written it.

  16. Homework • Get syllabus signed. • Read Native American poems on page one of blue books and complete first two columns of chart.

  17. Exit Slip - Front • On the note card you received, write: • Your Name • One thing you think I should know about you • One question you have about the course, the teachers, the world, life, etc.

  18. Exit Slip - Back Class Norms • Think of your pet peeves when it comes to classes. • Use these peeves to write down ONE expectation for each category: • Teacher expectations of students. • Students expectations of teacher. • Class expectations of one another. Expectations should be REASONABLE
