Cross Media Convergence is when lots of different types of media are used to the same ends, i.e. when a film is promoted and advertised on TV, in magazines, on the radio etc. Synergy is when two separate companies/groups of people (that are very good on their own) join forces and the end product is even better when they work together. The importance of Cross Media Convergence and Synergy in production, distribution and marketing. I am going to explore and try to understand how different medias are used to advertise and sell films, and how companies work together when producing, marketing and distributing films by comparing ‘This is England’ to ‘Harry Potter 6’.

Distribution Harry Potter 6 This Is England • Warner Bros. is one of the largest distributors in the world • They have released some of the most prominent films ever, including the ‘Batman’, ‘Matrix’, ‘Superman’, ‘The exorcist’, ‘Robin Hood’, ‘Gremlins’ and ‘Harry Potter’ films. • It is a subsidiary of the Time Warner company and has several subsidiaries of it’s own, like Warner Bros. Studios, Warner Bros. Pictures etc. • Distributed by Optimum Releasing, who also produce many foreign language films and anime. • Owned by StudioCanal who are a subsidiary of Vivendi. • They release over 200 films p/a and are one of the most prominent distributors in the UK. • As the are one of the main distributors in the UK they were able to get it out without help from any other companies.
Marketing Harry Potter 6 This Is England • Warner Bros produced loads of Harry Potter merchandise so that it would appeal to everyone and would be everywhere you look; unforgettable. • The film was advertised on billboards, buses, the internet, on TV, in magazines and newspapers.
