NDIA Meetings • SEI (SW Engineering Institute) SoS Architecture Patterns • SEI is developing a white paper describing how SW development patterns can assist with SoS architecture development • NDIA SoS / M&S Joint Committee Meeting • Judith Dahman (SoS Committee Chair) briefed the M&S committee on the SoS “pain points” and how M&S can help address the issues • NDIA SE Committee Meeting • Bi-monthly SE meeting • NDIA DT&E Committee Meeting
SEI SoS Architecture Patterns • Attending Orgs: SEI, Boeing, Army, Purdue, Dynamic Animation Systems, LM, Mitre • Patterns are a common way to develop SW architectures • Currently there is no SoS level of patterns • Benefit would be a less risky starting point for development of SW that is part of a SoS solution and to reduce variants needed to be studied to start code development • SEI approach was to start with current SW patterns and to extrapolate up • This caused communications / semantics difficulties with SE / SoS community • Recommendation was to start with SoS context and show how patterns could evolve and applied to the SE / SoS development
Joint SoS / M&S Committee Meeting • M&S identified opportunities to assist in SoS issues: • Exploration of SoS conops space to evaluate alternative mission scenarios • Exploration of requirements set and evaluation of implications of setting SoS requirements • Exploration of architecture alternatives and the impacts of emergent behavior (i.e., what happens, often unintended) when systems are inserted into a SoS • End-to-end operating environment to model mission threads • Supplement or replace testing • “Future proofing” of systems; identification of requirements to be able to operate in “next year’s” environment
NDIA SE Committee Meeting • Jim Thompson (OSD) discussed “Should Cost Memo” and 2013 “Performance of the Defense Acquisition System” report • Dr. Steve Hutchison (Acting Deputy Assistant Sec’y T&E) discussed his “Shift Left” initiative to put out guidance on how to start test efforts prior to Milestone C • Jim Thompson discussed need to update Risk Management Guide • Affordability Handbook (joint MORS, NDIA, INCOSE) out for review 26 Aug to 12 Sept • Send Steve Henry email if want to review it • Gary Roedler discussed the new SE Standard • IEEE addendum to 15288 standard • New NDIA SE Agile working group established • SEI writing a white paper • Working group helping to write language for RFP sections L&M • NOTE: I had a side conversation with Steve Henry and he promised to post our deliverable with the NDIA products, and to send the paper and cover letter to Dr. Welby.
NDIA SE Conference • 16th Annual Systems Engineering Conference*** Hyatt Regency Crystal City Arlington, VA October 28-31, 2013 Event #4870 www.ndia.org/meetings/4870 • Register before September 28, 2013 to lock in the early, discounted rate! • Architecture Track info: • Track 6 on Wednesday – 13 papers • Track 6 on Thursday – Joint track with SoS, 3 papers • If you have a paper that was not accepted, but want it to be on the alternate list, let Steve Henry know
Upcoming Architecture Subcommittee Tasks • Review Mission Analysis whitepaper on use of architecture in early development • Review SEI report on SoS Architecture Patterns • Participate in SE standard development if desired • Contact Gary Roedler • Attend SE Conference • Meet with M&S Committee to discuss MBSE • Meet with T&E Committee to help them identify T&E perspective of architecture products • Invite J6 to brief joint mission threads
