  9. Letter from the West • Read the letter • 1. Describe the weather in April, 1876. How did it effect farming? • 2.The letter shows the importance of neighbors. What did the Oblinger’s receive from their neighbors? • 3.What do the children do for entertainment? • 4. Homesteaders had to make most of their own things. What examples are in the letter?

  11. Without a Mother The sod house on the Oblinger claim was Mattie Oblinger's last home. She died there in February of 1880 at the age of 36 from complications due to childbirth and was buried with her infant son.
