2. Our Problem Statement How can we ensure the nature in Indonesia can be preserved in such a way that locals do not get adversely affected?

3. More About Illegal Logging The locals in Indonesia are logging to get wood. Forests are also cleared for purpose of expanding farm land. Illegal logging has destroyed 10 million hectares of forests.

4. Seriousness of Deforestation • Indonesia was still densely forested as recently as 1950. • The rate of forest loss is accelerating. • Indonesia’s lowland tropical forests, the richest in timber resources and biodiversity, are most at risk. • Nearly half of Indonesia’s forests are fragmented by roads, other access routes, and developments such as plantations.

5. Causes of Deforestation • Bribery • Forest fires • Poor land management • Illegal mining and logging • Clearing of land for farming • Mercury contamination

Current measures • All unlicensed chainsaws would be confiscated from private owners and traders. • In May 2010, Indonesia signed a Letter of Intent with Norway to reduce deforestation in Indonesia. • In May 2011, President Yudhoyono issued an Instruction requiring a two-year moratorium for issuing new licenses for development in primary forests and peat lands

7. If we Do Something… • Crises will be averted • Animals have homes and don’t die so easily • Locals will be more educated about deforestation • Reduced global warming • There will be less greenhouse gas in Indonesia

8. If we do nothing… • Water pollution • Land becomes infertile permanently • Soil erosion • Reduced future supply of good wood • Global warming • No homes for animals • Adverse economic impact • Patches of barren land

9. Our Solution Our solution is to teach locals about how to maintain a sustainable rate of deforestation. This would include helping the locals explore other sustainable means of livelihood that will reduce the current rate of deforestation.

10. Why Our Solution Will Be Effective • Locals will realise that they are cutting down too many trees. • They will realise the consequences of their actions and will reduce the number of trees they cut down.
