Deforestation In Indonesia Group Members : Tan Ying Hui, Lydia Loh, Silas Yeo, Lixon Low, Jae Mak
Causes Of Problem There are many causes of this problem, like • Land Management • Foreign Companies • Government concessions (Corrupted Government) • Law enforcements • Failed Projects • Palm oil Plantations • Mining • Forest Fires • Income for Farmers (Illegal logging) • Jealously and Misunderstanding • Demand of Resources • Urbanization
Consequences If We Do Not Do Anything... • Deforestation • Extinct Species (OrangUtans) • Air pollution • Global Warming (Peat) If We Do Something… • Farmers might face economical crisis (Poverty) • Problem might be solved
Possible Solutions Farmers Logging Companies Corrupt Government
Possible Solution (Farmers) • Pay villagers/farmers (part of people who cause deforestation) • Start with a small sum of money as a reward if they do not cut or burn down forests • Subsequently add on to the money they receive • After 6 months, stop the increase but continue for 6 more months • During the 6 more months, send villagers/farmers for courses (concerning deforestation) • Try to educate them on deforestation • Try to let them see the bigger impact on the environment • Award more villages the hutandesa status • Give them a starting sum to fund the necessary things they need • Award them with some money if there is a decrease in deforestation in their area *Funds coming in from REDD scheme
Possible Solution (Logging Companies) Make all Logging Companies Register themselves as a company • Once registered, they will have to submit reports to the Ministry of Forestry on • Number of trees they cut down • Where they cut them • Based on • Number of trees they cut down • Rate of deforestation where they cut the trees the Ministry of Forestry will give them a rate at which they can sell their timber or wood products For example, if Company X cuts down 50 trees in a place where the rate of deforestation is very high, the rate at which Company X sells the timber to customers will be low. Since the Company will make less profit, they will turn to places with a lower rate of deforestation, and thus will give the other forest more time to grow back.
Possible Solution (Government) “Only Indonesians can overcome corruption in Indonesia. They will do so if persuaded that they must. Careful studies exposing in detail the systems, networks, and social and economic costs of corruption are essential tools in the anti-corruption campaign. Will, as Buddha noted, attends knowledge.” ~Gary Goodpaster • Educate the young on integrity • In school, teach young children on why it is important to be honest and have the right values in life • In university or when youths are mature enough, educate them on the importance on applying these values in life and during work • Thus, future leaders of the country will lead the country with the right values and get rid of the corruption
