A Little Bit of History • Throughout history of the Church few changes have been made • None of the changes effect the meaning of the Mass • Early Church celebrated the ”Breaking of the Bread” then the Liturgy of the Word; Scripture, Psalms and instruction • Celebrated in people’s homes until Emperor Constantine built churches

History Continued….. • Mass was celebrated in Latin the language of the Roman Empire • 301-1500AD Liturgy became more formal; priests began to wear vestments, incense, bells, genuflection were added • 1500-1900AD Council of Trent reformed Missal, Pope Pius V called for a standard missal for the Western Church

History Continued….. • 1962 – Present, Second Vatican Council outlined liturgical changes; including mass being said in both Latin and the vernacular or “mother tongue” • The mass we experience today is the result of bishops, liturgists, and theologians who translated it from Latin to English • Prayers of the Roman Catholic Church always originate in Latin, there have been 3 editions of the Roman Missal, last one to be published in 2002

What Will the New Translation Do? • Translators now have a firmer grasp of the meaning of the original texts and how we should pray • The goal is for our Missal to “accurately” translate the Latin without paraphrasing • Help better connect the words of the Mass to the Scripture readings • Some sentences in the prayers are longer and the vocabulary is more extensive

  6. Translation continued… • Two types of translation; formal equivalence (literal translation) and dynamic equivalence (seeks to get across the thought that is expressed in the text) • New revision reflects dynamic approach • The goal is to make the translation more accurate

  7. Prayers are more humble and acknowledge the majesty of God • The process was guided by the International Commission on English in the Liturgy (ICEL). Eleven bishops from different countries around the world Now we begin with the new parts of the mass! (changes are highlighted in orange)

  8. I. The Introductory Rites • Entrance Procession and Chant, the mass begins when we stand as a sign to honor God • We believe Christ is present as our community begins its prayer • Most churches sign a song or hymn • We reverence the altar by bowing because the altar is a symbol of Christ himself

The priest says the words for the Sign of the Cross, “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit”, we respond “Amen” • The gesture of signing is our way of saying we belong to God • Sign of the cross reminds us that Jesus died on the cross for us • Next is the Greeting where the priest welcomes the assembly, “Good morning” • Then his greeting is formal as we enter into a holy time of prayer

  10. Greeting Priest: The Lord be with you You: And with your spirit “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit” (Philippians 4:23)

Penitential Act I confess to almighty God And to you, my brothers and sisters, That I have greatly sinned In my thoughts and in my words, In what I have done and in what I have failed to do, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary every-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and to you, my brothers and sisters, to pray fro me to the Lord our God.

  12. Gloria Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son. Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen

  14. Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,

  15. Nicene Creed cont. he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen

  16. III. Liturgy of the Eucharist Invitation to Prayer (Response) May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church

  18. III. Liturgy of the Eucharist cont. Sanctus or Holy, Holy, Holy Holy, Holy, Holy Lord of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

  19. III. Liturgy of the Eucharist cont. Memorial Acclamation Priest: The mystery of faith You: We proclaim your Death, O Lord, and profess your Resurrection until you come again.

  20. IV. The Communion Rite Sign of Peace Priest: The peace of the Lord be with you always. You: And with your Spirit Lamb of God Priest: Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. You: Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.
