DO YOUR MISSED DEADLINES END UP WITH CATASTROPHIC RESULTS?
ARE YOU MISSING SLEEP OR FALLING ASLEEP IN THE WRONG PLACES?
IF SO, HAVE YOU CONSIDERED TIME MANAGEMENT?
So Why Is Time Management Critical To Success? The focus is on RESULTS, NOT on being busy ! Don't just "work smart", work smart on the right things!
So Why Don’t More People Manage Their Time ? • They are too lazy to plan • They don’t know how to go about it • They enjoy crisis management • They enjoy the adrenaline rush of meeting tight deadlines
Crisis Management and Tight Deadlines The problem with crisis management and tight deadlines is that while they can be fun, they can often lead to: • High levels of stress • No feeling of having any free time • Continually feeling tired or exhausted • Occasionally failing to complete projects or missing deadlines
Benefits Of EffectiveTime Management ? • Reduced frustration • Increased energy level • Removing the guilt associated with not getting things done in a timely manner ****The Best Thing **** Getting more things accomplished
What’s RequiredTo Make It Work For You? • You Have To ……. • Look At How You Spend Your Time • Set Goals • Get Organized And Set Priorities • Make A Schedule • Learn to say “No”
To StartAssess How You Spend Your Time • There are 168 hours in a week • How do you spend your time? • School • Work • Commuting • Play • Sleep • Before and after time (cushion time) • Other: Chores, maintenance, errands, etc.
Setting Goals • Short-Term & Long-Term (For a Week, Month, Semester, Season) • Personal • Work / Career /Academic • To Work, Goals Have To Be SMART • Specific • Measurable • Attainable • Rewarding • Timely
Get Organized,Set Your Priorities & Stick To Them • Get Yourself Organized • Organize your work space • Start a file system • Develop a master list of priorities • “A” = absolutely must get done • “B” = could do it if no impact on “A” • “C” = if time allows, maybe Be prepared for the unplanned !
Scheduling • Don’t overbook • Give yourself time to complete tasks • Insure privacy and limit interruptions • Complete most difficult tasks first • Avoid procrastination! • Reward Yourself When Your Done!
What Does Procrastination Look Like ? • Ignoring things ... hoping they’ll go away • Underestimating the work/time involved for a task • Deceiving yourself that half-done is ok! • Changing to a worthy but lower-priority item • Believing that repeated “MINOR” delays won’t hurt you • Spend hours talking about something, but doing nothing to get it completed
“NO, NO, NO” • How do you say “No”? • When do you say “No”? • What does it take to get you to say “No”?
Where Does It Start? • Preparation • Budgeting Your Time • Having A Place To Study • Being Organized • Having Proper Health And Nutrition • Knowing Your Learning Style
To Be Effective At Studying And Learning You Have To Know Your Learning Style !! • Learning style deals with the way we acquire knowledge • It affects how you process material as you study and how you absorb it • What’s Yours? • Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic
LEFT Handwriting Symbols Reading Phonics Locating Details/Facts Talking/Reciting Listening Following Directions Most ACADEMIC information is geared to the left side of the brain RIGHT • Spatial Relationships • Perception • Shapes and Patterns • Color Sensitivity • Singing and Music • Creativity • Visualization • Feeling and Emotion
Right and left work together for many things, but process information in very different ways • Most people have a dominant side • When something is new, difficult or unfamiliar,we automatically go to our dominant side • No one is totally left or totally right brained • You can andmust develop both sides of the brain
What’s Next To Get YouThrough The Maze? • Lesson Preparation • Attending Class • Being Active in Class Discussions • Note Taking • Active Listening • Study Time • Study Tools
Before Class Preparation • Read the assigned readings • Not always easy to do with some textbooks • Students tend to have difficulty concentrating • May not understand the content of the chapter • Read before you mark, think before you mark • Pay attention to the first and last sentences of paragraphs and to any special formatting that is utilized • Recite key ideas • Read in 50 minute blocks of time, taking short breaks in between
Before Class Preparation • Make Notes Based On What You Read • Mapping vs. Free-Form notes • Organize your notes to allow for questions in the margin on things you don’t understand in the readings Additional information from lecture Questions from readings Notes from readings
You Have To Be Active InThe Learning Process • Participate both in and out of class • This puts you in charge of your learning • Requires you to be prepared before every class, not just for exams • Ask the questions in class everyone else wants to but doesn’t • Ask instructors to speak slower or go back over material to help you understand more fully
Study TimeandHomework • Take 10 minutes each day to review your notes for each class • Do this before you begin homework to get your thinking focused in the right direction • Do the assigned problems and write questions to bring back to class if you don’t understand something • Don’t give up if you don’t get things right away • They often take time to sink in! • Look at what you learn from the assignments to assist you in studying for exams
Short-Term Memory • Most forgetting takes place in the first 24 hours after you are exposed to something • This emphasizes the reason to study each day what you heard in that days lecture to assist in the “chunking” of memory that helps things get into long-term memory Long-Term Memory
Study Tools That May Be Helpful • Flashcards • Acronyms • Acrostics • Sentences in which the first letter of each word is the same as the first letter you want to remember • Break up information, then repeat it • Utilizing a study partner to ask one another questions
How Will This Help Me To Prepare For Exams? • Establishes the structure of studying • Eliminates wasted time getting into study mode • Makes the time prior to exams for review rather than learning new material • Eliminates cramming which can actually cause you to loose information in your memory storage !!
