  2. Some basics of nutrition • Macro Nutrients • Carbohydrates • Proteins • Fats

  3. 1 gram = 4 calories carbs • They are the primary energy source for the body • Complex carbs for stored energy and simple carbs for immediate use • Found in vegetables, fruits, nuts, and grains

  4. Proteins • They are found in meats, fish, nuts, milk, beans • They are responsible for muscle building and repair • Assist in keeping a strong immune system 1 gram = 4 calories

  5. Fats • Saturated • Un-Saturated • Mono-Unsaturated • Poly-Unsaturated • Trans-Fatty Acids 1 gram = 9 calories! Lots of energy in there.

Physical activity vs. exercise • Physical Activity can be defined as: Any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that requires expenditure of energy. • Walking • Putting groceries away • Exercise can be described as: Bodily exertion for the sake of developing and maintaining physical fitness (Merriam-Webster dictionary). • Lifting weights • jogging

How long should you exercise? • From the department of Health and Human Services: • All persons should eat a healthy diet and exercise a minimum of 30 minutes per day. • The above recommendation is for people to maintain a healthy weight. • For somebody that is trying to lose weight while eating a healthy diet, it is recommended to exercise 60 minutes per day. • For an obese person to lose weight at a healthy interval it is recommended to exercise 90 minutes per day while maintaining a healthy diet. Try riding a stationary bike or using treadmill while watching your favorite TV show

  16. Impact activities • Activities that put high amounts of stress and load on the joints and connective tissue. • Running • Jumping • Playing basketball • Why are impact activities important to you health?

Non-impact activities • Activities that place a lesser amount of load and stress on joints and connective tissue. • Cycling • Swimming • Rowing • Why are non-impact activities important to your health? Many charitable organization use cycling events to raise money. Get healthy for a good cause.

Activities you can get involved with • Through your school: • Sports teams such as football, wrestling, track & field • Clubs such as ultimate frisbee, volleyball, dodge-ball • Outside of school: • Recreation clubs for softball, floor hockey, basketball • Associations for running, cycling, triathlon • Don’t be afraid to GET INVOLVED! You can always start a new club to fit your interests!
