Algebra I Honors Class for Gifted Students Who Seek a Challenging Curriculum Ms. Judith Buzzell, Algebra I Honors Waccamaw Middle School jbuzzell@gcsd.k12.sc.us
Course Expectations • Algebra I Honors is designed for college preparatory students desiring a formal background in mathematics. It is intended for highly motivated students who wish to experience a challenging, rigorous curriculum. Being the first math credit, the final grade WILL count toward your child’s GPA and class rank at the high school.
Course Expectations • The depth of topics, the pace at which the topics are covered, the breadth of application of concepts and the expected retention of topics are substantial. It is expected, therefore, that Algebra I Honors students assume a great deal of the responsibility for their learning, actively seeking assistance if they perceive it is needed.
Course Expectations • A “C” average or above is expected. If the student falls below a “C” during the first nine weeks, a conference will be held with the Evaluation Placement Team, parents, teacher, and the student to determine if the student is to remain in the class.
Course Expectations • A teacher recommendation is needed for students to continue in the Honors track. Only students with a strong A or B average will receive that recommendation because previous experience has proven that these are the students who are successful in the more challenging classes in high school. • Students who stay in Algebra I Honors must successfully complete the course in order to pass the 8th grade.
