What is Social Networking? • Builds online communities of people who share common interests or activities. • Most social networks are web based and provide a variety of ways for users to interact through e-mail and instant messaging services.
Most Popular Social Networking Sites. • The following are registered users • MySpace – 246,351,193 • Facebook – 124 million • Classmates.com -- 50 million • Bebo – 40 million and growing
The good and the bad of Social Networking • Many people like social networking as a way of making friends • The rates of predators are on the rise for social networking • Many businesses use social networks as a hiring tool for employees – good or bad?
MySpace • Offers user-submitted network of friends, personal profiles, blogs, groups, photos, music, and videos for teenagers and adults internationally. • Headquarters are in Beverly Hills, CA. • Founded in 2003. • The very first users were eUniverse employees.
Making Friends on MySpace • Most popular with over 200 million registered users • In 2003 it was a small, music-oriented social network with 89 million people. • It is the 7th most frequented website in the world.
A Typical MySpacer • Are you one? • A typical MySpace has 200 “friends” • Spend about 5 days a week and 2 hours a day on the site using IM, E-mail, and posting and reading bulletins. • In 2006, less than one in three had an uncomfortable experience, only 7-9 percent were approached for a sexual liaison.
Facebook • Founded by Mark Zuckerberg on Feb. 4, 2004. • Initially restricted membership to students at Harvard College. • In March 2004, Facebook expanded to Stanford, Yale, and Columbia. • The expansion continued to all Ivy League schools and to most universities in Canada and the U.S. • In June 2004 – set headquarters in Palo Alto, CA and international headquarters in Dublin, Ireland.
Facebook Continued • Users can join networks by city, workplace, school, and region to interact with other people. • People can add friends, send them messages, update their personal profile, notify their friends about themselves. • It has been blocked in Syria and Iran. • It has been banned at many places of work to increase productivity.
Facebook Opened to Everyone • In Sept. 2005 high school networks required an invitation to join. • Later they expanded membership eligibility to several companies including Apple Inc. and Microsoft.

Classmates.com Membership • Basic Membership • Create profiles, view other profiles, photos, biographies, timelines, interests, and announcements as well as searching for friends. Cannot receive emails. • Gold Membership • Pay a fee, send and receive emails, view notes posted on their profile bulletin board, see who has visited their profile and signed their guest book access and use tools for planning reunions and create their own private groups.
Bebo • Founded January 2005 • Bebo is an acronym for “Blog early, blog often” • It has two specific modules – a comment section where other users can leave a message, and a list of the user’s friends. • Default sets it to private. The user may change it to public. • Profiles may include quizzes, photo albums, blogs, a list of bands, a list of groups, and/or a video box.
Are you safe socially networking???Predators are lurking. • There are many predators amongst us while social networking. • The Internet is the number one way that predators try to contact their victims. • National Internet poll of teens showed that over half of them ages 13 to 18 communicated with someone they had never met in person.
How Safe Are Our Children? • MySpace Suicide Case • Lori Drew was indicted in perpetrating a hoax on MySpace against 13-year old neighbor (Megan) who committed suicide. • Megan hung herself after receiving cruel messages, including one that the world would be better off without her. • Katherine Lester going to marry Abdullah Jimzawi • Ran off to the Middle East to meet a man who contacted her on MySpace. • She was only sixteen. • She was intercepted in Jordan, sent back to the US, a hearing in court ordered her to surrender her passport and go to counseling.
Social Networking is a Hiring Tool for Businesses • 22 % of banks say they use sites to research job candidates. • CareerBuilder.com • 1/3 that reported they use the sites reported they found content that caused them to dismiss the candidate from being considered.
Business Bad Reports • They found the candidates posted information about the following: • Drinking or using drugs • Provocative or inappropriate photographs • Poor Communication Skills • Bad-mouthed prior employer • Lied about qualifications • Used discriminatory remarks related to race, gender, religion, etc. • Screen name was unprofessional • Linked to criminal behavior • Shared confidential information from previous employers
Businesses Good Reports • They found out the following information about the candidate: • Background supported qualifications • Great communication skills • Good fit for the company’s culture • Site conveyed a professional image • Great references • Showed a wide range of interests • Received awards and accolades • Profile was creative
Closing……The Good and Bad • Good • Social Networking can help you find old friends, family, classmates, and acquaintances. • It is fun to blog, chat, and email. • It can also be very resourceful in finding a job. • Bad • Be very cautious when receiving messages from someone you don’t know. • Don’t put any pictures, words, phrases, or unprofessional images or objects on your pages that could be damaging to your character or career.
