Matthew 16:1-41 Then the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and testing Him asked that He would show them a sign from heaven. 2 He answered and said to them, “When it is evening you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red’; 3 and in the morning, ‘It will be foul weather today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ Hypocrites! You know how to discern the face of the sky, but you cannot discern the signs of the times. 4 A wicked and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign shall be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.” And He left them and departed.

  3. Luke 11:29-3029And while the crowds were thickly gathered together, He began to say, “This is an evil generation. It seeks a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah the prophet. 30For as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so also the Son of Man will be to this generation.

He went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord.

WAS SACRIFICED BECAUSE THE HEATHEN WERE RAGING Peter prayed in Acts 4:25-28 25who by the mouth of Your servant David have said: ‘Why did the nations rage,And the people plot vain things? 26The kings of the earth took their stand,And the rulers were gathered togetherAgainst the Lord and against His Christ.’ Jonah 1:4-13 • Jonah was tossed overboard because he was the cause of the tempest. • As soon as he was tossed overboard, the sea quieted down and the ship and its crew was saved.

Acts 4:25-28 27“For truly against Your holy Servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, were gathered together  28to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose determined before to be done. John 15:18 “If the world hates you, you know that it has hated Me before it hated you”.

I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father.” Jonah 1:12 And he said to them, “Pick me up and throw me into the sea; then the sea will become calm for you. For I know that this great tempest is because of me.”

  11. 2 Corinthians 5:14 “For the love of Christ controls us, having concluded this, that one died for all, therefore all died;”  Galatians 2:20 “I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no long I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and delivered himself up for me”.

Jonah 3:1-4 Matthew 12:41-The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and indeed a greater than Jonah is here

  16. 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. 2 Corinthians 7:10 Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.

Matthew 13:53-58 Jesus Rejected at Nazareth Jonah 3:5So the people of Nineveh believed God, proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least of them.

Therefore I fled previously to Tarshish; for I know that You are a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, One who relents from doing harm.

IS SELFLESSLY SORROWFUL John 19:41-44 Jesus wept over Jerusalem because He knew what sort of people were there. There are spiritually blinded. Matthew 9:36But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd. Jonah 4:1-2 1But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he became angry. 2So he prayed to the Lord, and said, “Ah, Lord, was not this what I said when I was still in my country? Therefore I fled previously to Tarshish; for I know that You are a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, One who relents from doing harm.

  20. CONCLUSION: So, what was the sign of the Prophet Jonah? The most obvious reference is the three days and nights in the belly of the great fish which represents sheol. It’s not just an old story of a person swallowed by a big fish but it’s a picture where Jesus conquered death.

  21. 1 Corinthians 15:55-57 55“O Death, where is your sting?O Hades, where is your victory?” 56The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus is Alive and He is alive forever.

  22. THE PROMISED OF GOD: John 14:1-3 1“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.
