MORE ON COMICS IN THE CLASSROOM… • Discussion of the world of possibilities that comics offer in the classroom, including how panelists use and choose (curriculum) comics at all levels of education. • As comics gain momentum in all levels of education from kindergarten to college, we see how storytelling in this form offers opportunities for brain development, critical thinking, creative growth, social justice, language acquisition, and so much more. • Panelists spanned kindergarten through college: • Frederick Luis Aldama (Professor, The Ohio State University, Tales from La Vida, Long Stories Cut Short), Cathy Camper (Librarian, Lowriders in Space, Bugs Before Time), Luke Martinez (Grade school educator, creator of The Ascendant), Héctor Rodriguez III (High school educator, creator of El Peso Hero series), moderated by Theresa Rojas, MJC faculty
I LOVED how you cut across so many barriers, mixing students with community with comics fans with creators…I appreciated how a lot of women creators were invited, not always true of comics fests. I had some fantastic and moving talks with other creators, and with people that came to the Expo. I could not believe the level of community involvement. I loved seeing how many people were there [who] weren't even yet comics fans. Also, the panel location and set up was the best I've ever seen. Love the wide array of exhibitors! Loved the fact that there were comics, zines, kids books, clothing, and graphic novels. THANK YOU MJC / MODESTO!
