  2. Democratic In a democratic government the power rests with the people.

  3. Great Migration The Great Migration is the name given to the choice and action made by many Puritan families to leave England and come to America.

  4. Constitution A constitution is a document that sets the basic rules for a government.

  5. Enlightenment • The idea that reason and logic could be applied to the world.

  6. Parliament • The Law making body in England.

  7. Salutary Neglect • The hands-off policy concerning the King of England and the American Colonists.

  8. Magna Carta • The 1215 agreement between the King of England and British citizens which limited the power of the King.

  9. Middle Passage • The voyage from Africa to the Caribbean taken by slave traders and their cargo.

  10. John Locke • The Enlightened thinker who first spoke about the theory of “Natural Rights”.

  11. Unalienable Rights • Rights that cannot be taken away by any government.

  12. Habeas Corpus • The right of an accused person to know the charges being brought against them. First applied in 1689.

  13. English Bill of Rights • A list of protections given to British citizens which also limit the power of the King.

  14. Overseer • A person, usually a slave, who is in charge of slaves on a plantation.

  15. *Bonus:*John Peter Zenger • The first person who used as a defense the right to speak the truth, or freedom of speech in the colonies.
