Light Name________________________
What Happens When… • Light strikes an object?
Light Can Be… • Reflected, transmitted (go through something), or absorbed!
How Light Interacts with Objects • Transparent materials allow light to pass right through it! You can see clearly what is on the other side. • Translucent materials scatter light as it passes, and you can usually see a fuzzy image of what is on the other side. • Opaque materials reflect or absorb all of the light. You can’t see what’s on the other side.
What Determines the Color of Objects? • Opaque Objects: The color you see if the color of the light reflected!
Color of Transparent and Translucent Objects • The color that the object transmits is the color you see!
Combining Colors • Primary Colors of Light… Make a prediction!
Secondary Colors of Light Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow Cyan Magenta Yellow
Complimentary Colors • Any TWO colors that can combine to make white light. Let’s figure them out, and you take notes on our discussion, OK?
As You Add More Light Color… • A). The colors get lighter • B). The colors get darker • C). The colors stay the same
Pigments! • Pigments: colored substances that are used to color other materials • Paints • Inks • Dyes • Makeup

Reflection! • Remember… Reflection is a bouncing of waves!
Two Kinds of Reflection Are… • Regular Reflection: Light rays bounce at the same angle because of a smooth reflecting surface. The image you see if sharp!
And the Other Reflection Is… • Diffuse Reflection: Light rays bounce at different angles because of a bumpy or uneven reflecting surface. The image you see if fuzzy or unclear! (p 114 of text)
Refraction • Remember this from Hatchet? • What was happening?
Refraction • Refraction: When light rays enter a medium at an angle, the change in speed causes the rays to bend, or change direction. (p. 120)
