Mixtures • Can be classified by how well the parts of the mixture are mixed • Can be separated by physical means like filtration or distillation

Heterogeneous Mixtures • Not evenly mixed • Can easily see the different parts

Homogenous Mixtures • Evenly mixed • Appear as only one substance (like tap water)

Solutions • Homogeneous mixture • Does not separate into layers over time • Particles don’t settle out • Can’t be filtered • Don’t scatter light

Suspensions • Heterogeneous mixture • Separates into layers over time • Can use filter to separate • Scatter light • Usually cloudy

Colloids • Considered a homogeneous mixutre • Particles in-between a suspension & a solution • Do not separate into layers • Cannot use a filter to separate • Scatter light
