  2. Article 246 Marine scientific research in the exclusive economic zone and on the continental shelf shall be conducted with the consent of the coastal State

  3. Article 248 States and organizations which intends to undertake marine scientific research on the continental shelf of a coastal State shall, not less than six months in advance of the expected starting date, provide the coastal State a detailed description of the timing and nature of the research project.

  4. Article 249 • Lists the conditions to which the reserach instituions has to comply with, inter alia : • On request, provide preliminary and final reports • On request, provide access to all data and samples • On request, provide assessment of the data • Ensure that reserach results are published internationally

  5. Types of Data • Biological samples and analysis • Environment data • Ocanographic data • Hydrographic data • Geophysical data (seismic, potential field) • Geological data (cores, logs, dredging )

  6. National legislation The national legislation is the basis for the effective implementation of UNCLOS, Part XIII.
