Emerging Challenges Bandwidth Consumption • Rice University Bandwidth • Video usage is consistent with global trends (growing) • >10% of traffic is Netflix • Average daily throughput is 4.5 Gbps to 5.5 Gbps • Peak throughput this quarter was 16.65 Gbps
Existing Challenges Secure Seamless Access • Wireless • Cellular • Wi-Fi • Outdoor Wi-Fi • Campus LTE coverage • Network Segregation (Affinity Groups) • Location based access
Short Term Initiatives Wired (Summer/Fall 2018) • Network Resiliency Assessment • Performed network hardening exercises. • Performed software upgrades campus wide. • Addressed some configurations that could have caused future network instability. • ISE – AccessSecurity solution deployment was completed over the summer. Wireless/WiFi (Summer/Fall 2018) • Upgraded wireless controllers • Access Point deployment • Over 50 new AP’s in classrooms. • Over 25 new AP’s in the colleges (Support for Comp 140) • Increased the 2.4 GHz footprint across the campus to fill coverage holes. • Network Configuration changes to allow seamless connections for Smart & IoT devices
Long Term Initiatives • Wireless/Wi-Fi • Bigger, better, faster • Outdoor wireless coverage • Framework for future initiatives. e.g. 802.11ax, Wayfinding • RFP (Open Now – Closes January) • Kickoff (Spring 2019) • Install ‘massive’ fiber optic trunk between Mudd Lab and BRC (Spring 2019) • Enables future building entry diversity & more collaboration with our partners • Continue to expand high speed access to cloud and collaborative infrastructure • Deliver residential like experiences • Smart Devices, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, gaming systems) • Explore improvements to Cellular LTE coverage across campus • Implement standardized and simplified network architecture across campus
